2016 Toyota RAV4 Overview

Data provided by Edmunds

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 is a compact crossover that offers more passenger and cargo room than most competitors, while generally being well-rounded and free of deal-breaking flaws. Key rivals are more appealing in certain respects, however, so cross-shopping is highly recommended.

As any sports fan will attest, sometimes you can have a well-rounded team, play at a competitive level, pack the stands and still fail to find glory. Well, we hereby present that as a metaphor for the 2016 Toyota RAV4. It's spacious, versatile, decent to drive, comfortable and well-equipped, and it also enjoys one of the best reliability reputations in its segment. Trouble is, there are competitors that match or beat it in those areas while going a few steps further in others. To its credit, Toyota has tinkered with the RAV4 this year in hopes of improving its appeal. The exterior styling has been subtly massaged, especially up front, where there's a more streamlined look that modernizes this crossover's mien. The 2016 RAV4 also adds an SE trim to its portfolio. The SE, following in the footsteps of Toyota's popular Camry and Sienna SE trims, boasts sporty styling flourishes and a suspension tuned for better handling. What thankfully carries over is the RAV4's impressive cabin space. The cargo area is large, boxy and its load floor is low, making it one of the most versatile compact crossovers available. Need to carry the box for a Little Tikes playhouse or lug around a vivacious Weimaraner? The RAV4 is well suited to the task. It also offers one of the most accommodating cabins for passengers. It's this spacious interior, along with the RAV4's history of dependability, that constitutes this compact crossover's primary appeal. Yet, the RAV4 isn't the only model with a polished resumé. The Honda CR-V is just as spacious and dependable, but it can also claim superior fuel economy and an even more versatile cabin. To a lesser extent, the same can be said of the rugged Subaru Forester, which also boasts best-in-class acceleration with its optional turbocharged engine. Then there's the Mazda CX-5, which isn't quite as utilitarian but offers a more dynamic, carlike driving experience. The 2016 RAV4 is a well-rounded, solid competitor that's popular for good reason, but a few of the other members of this league may stand a better chance of winning you over.

Although the 2016 Toyota RAV4 isn't a standout in any one area, its combination of features, passenger space and everyday utility warrant a closer look if you're shopping for a small crossover.

The Toyota RAV4 gets updated styling for 2016, including a sleeker front fascia. There's also a new SE trim that boasts sharper handling, LED headlights and additional distinctive styling elements inside and out. A new Toyota Safety Sense package available on the SE and Limited includes a variety of high-tech accident avoidance technologies. Finally, a new RAV4 Hybrid also debuts.

Still loving it~

I am still loving my Rav 4. My 6 ft 5 inch 17 year old has a little bit of trouble with leg room, but we are having fun with it. Looking forward to more drives this spring and summer~

First Rav4; Fourth Toyota

I've owned a 2000 Sienna, 2008 Prius, 2014 Prius and nor the Hybrid Rav4. Love it's ability to handle snow and slush! Surprisingly, each newer Prius has had a more cramped interior with less storage than the preceding ones! Not sure why Toyota is squeezing the storage compartments out of its cars. Blind-spot and behind-the-car visibility gets worse year after year. And the styling seems to get more angular and funky year after year. So those are the things I wish Toyota management and design teams would address. On the positive side, the automatic braking assist has already helped in traffic! Thank you Toyota. And I love my dealer's service team. Dependable, honest and concerned service staff has kept me a loyal Toyota customer more than the car's style, sticker price, or mileage stats. And I am so glad that Toyota is truly committed to hybrid technology. I think they do it best!

Rav 4 in time for the SNOW

Look online and figure out everything you want in and on your car. Talk with sales people from multiple dealerships and then make your choice. We tried all makes and models and narrowed our search. We live in the land of snow (average 30 feet a year, not stacked up). the Rav 4 handles awesome in the snow, icy roads, and the subzero temps.

Love this Hybrd.

Great array of safety features: blind spot monitor, rear view camera, automatic low/high beams. Sometimes it is difficult to read the navigation screen. Would like to see heat/act in rear seat.

Gas mileage is still same as like 2013

They must check gas mileage which is 22 by 29 like 2013 and features of a car.

Problems already

After owning 2 weeks I found that no one can hear me using the phone inside vehicle. There seems to be water intrusion when washing vehicle. Acceleration is poor on highway and left me add what a gas guzzler. I expected more quality coming from Toyota, as I had the Lexus suv. The handling is poor. The technology is llacking, it doesn't understand my voice control at all. Already bringing it in to get fixed. If the alignment isn't off then the car absolutely handles horribly on the roads and highways. I put my hand down to pick up a candy and pulled out a plastic cover.

First SUV purchase

It was a tie between the RAV4 and the Honda CRV. My daughter, whose car this is, selected the RAV, citing that the RAV felt more like a sedan and she wanted a truck feeling plus she liked the layout of the RAV BETTER

Great two-year lease

Great interior quality, reliability, entune/bluetooth, fuel economy. Surprisingly roomy (especially cargo space when seats folded down) for a compact SUV. Decent handling. However, 50hp+ would be great. Aside from slapping on your own turbo or NOS canisters, putting the car in "sports" mode and manual shifting yourself DOES keep revs a bit higher and provide you a bit of pep.

Family car

Acceleration and mpg are disappointing, but only the very reduced mpg was unexpected. Overall, if you're not looking for a crossover that is fun to drive like an X3, it's a good family car that has a better ride, interior size and options over the other makers in the mid-priced market (Honda, Mazda, KIA and Hundai). We test drove them all.

Pretty good car (still)

We have had the car for less than 1 month. Initially the dealership did not detail the car properly upon delivery. They made up for it a few days later. We did run into a problem with the Sirius XM. Sirius XM reset the programming 3 times. It did not fix the problem of sound cutting in and out. We will be taking the car to the dealer in a few days to examine the problem.

After seven months time...we find that the car's Blue Tooth system is not completely compatible with my wife's phone (a Motorola Droid Maxx II). The Blue Tooth connection is not reinstated each time my wife enters the car. She must do this manually. It is a small thing, but paying for all of this technology and having to 'hassle' between Toyota and Verizon and THEN find that Toyota says "sorry, they are not compatible"....gives me negative vibes. Why not investigate this stuff when you bring the product to market???? And if investigation WAS done, why not advise the customer????

Good little SUV but not great.

Pros - Looks great, handles well, great safety features and reliability. Cons - Gas mileage, around 21.5 combined (L.A.), a little noisy, front brakes (and this has never happened to me) won't last too long. I haven't needed brakes since cars I owned in the late 1980's. I trade them in around 35k-50k mileage. So this is a design flaw in the Toyota ESPECIALLY because they already have to turn/smooth the front rotors and replace the pads. (It's at the dealer as I write this.) No charge, under warranty, but still, this should not of happened yet. The interior is cheap. I have SO many little scratches, marks and a big 'dip' where my elbow rests on the smooth part where the window meets the plastic. I take really great care of my cars and have never seen so many interior marks. I'm a solo driver 97% of the time so this is just weird. Acceleration is acceptable but never fun, even in sport mode. Navigation is primitive, but that is no big deal because I use my iPhone for navigation through bluetooth which works nicely.

Nice little sport ute to save the day

So a little background on why I purchased a new Rav4. I had a 2007 Rav4 Limited that I had purchased earlier in the year I hoping I could reduce my debt and get a reliable car. My girlfriend and I decided that the new puppy needed to make a trip to Little Rock Arkansas which is about 400 miles away from us. I knew that this vehicle had started to consume about half a court of oil every 2000 miles or so which is acceptable by Toyota standards by the way. Understanding that this vehicle was almost 10 years and had 100,000 miles it wasn't a big deal to me. So what I have to add a little oil every once in awhile. I had never taken this vehicle on a trip before and checked the oil before I left making sure everything was good to go. After completing the journey I checked the oil the next day and found the dipstick to be completely dry. I had pumped over 1000 bucks in this car in the prior month and know it needs a motor great. I'm a huge Toyota fan so I promptly went to the nearest Toyota dealer and started looking for something reliable that would get me and the girlfriend home without any trouble on Easter Sunday, I had been looking at a newer Rav4 anyways just to look and decided that's what I needed to get. I found the one and I wanted and after spending half a day of my vacation buying a car I went to dinner with my family. I was very impressed with how quiet it was compared to the previous generation and loved the standard infotainment system the car had. Being an LE I liked the fact that it had bluetooth and a back up camera standard. The next day we started our trip back home and I found myself speeding most of the way home because of how quiet it was. The sensation of speed is completely different. Going through the Boston mountains I began to notice how much the 6 speed transmissions shift and became very annoyed with it. After owning this car for almost a year and almost 13,000 miles on it I still annoys me how much it shifts. Without that transmission though it probably wouldn't get the gas mileage it does. After a few thousands miles on the odometer I'm pleased to report that I can get over 30mpg consistently. I think the worst gas mileage Ive seen is 28. After a year the car still remains quiet and I've had no problems. I like the service intervals to. 10,000 miles for an oil change on synthetic oil isn't a bad deal. The one thing that I had to change is the headlights. This car is the projector headlight lenses and I found it very hard to see to the right or left of the vehicle at night. It made it hard to determine how close I was to the ditches when driving at night. I could see that being a problem and somebody taking a turn and clipping a curb or driving right into a deep ditch. I turned to Amazon and purchased a set of LED headlights. I notice the new corollas have them so it was pretty easy to get my hands on set for 100 bucks. They made all of the difference in the world. The other thing that disappoints me is the how much these things are new. I believe my sticker showed almost 27,000. A few years ago you could buy a 4WD XLE with a sunroof for about 25k. I guess that's inflation for you. Great car, love the size, love the gas mileage.

HATE it LOVE it

My version of the 2016 rav 4 is the most expensive with the bird's eye view and thinking that spending 40,000 on this car would last me a lifetime, but I am slowly starting to count down the days until I am able to trade it in. Don't get me wrong the bird's eye view is great, the blind spot sensors are great, the car is awkwardly high and low at the same time, but what bothers me the most is that I can never get the Pandora or Iheart radio to work. And the apps for Toyota are really horrible. The car itself is spacious if you are no taller than 5"10 so far the I've only had one oil change, and seems to be running fine, but I only get 23mpg city which seems very low for an eco friendly 4 cyl. car.

Rave for the RAV!

It has it all. Fantastic. The two tone nutmeg seats are gorgeous. The seats are comfortable and room for 5 adults my size, (which is not small.) great handling and all the technology I need in a car. The side blind spot mirrors are great as I did not like the idea of flashing lights and buzzers ever time a vehicle came near the car. Mileage is great, got 36.2 on my last trip from work! Really a fun and super car to own.

Big bang for your buck

Just got the SE trim last week, and the more I look at this car and the more I drive it, the more I love it, the seats are comfortable, although fake leather for the price you are paying is a bummer, it still looks and feels great. The ride is smooth, sometimes a bit noisy from the road, but handles great, for my day to day driving, the pick up is fine, we didn't buy it to be a racer. the entertainment well, was disappointing to find out, with the higher priced JBL system, it didn't come with a CD player, first car since the 80's that didn't have one, but, the Nav is great, the sound is good and easy to control. The room for the back passengers is great, plenty of leg and head room, the cargo area is great, especially when you fold the seats down. All in all, a great ride for the money, and I have no regrets, except maybe for the dealership I went to, but, that's for another review.

Worst quality & service experience for RAV4

Just 3 months old with 3000 miles. Already repaired twice, once for rubbery brakes and for tailgate being jammed. Worst service experience in Avenel, NJ. Highly disappointed with Toyota quality and experience about which I had heard a lot. Even with 90% highway driving, giving only 23

New RAV4

Consumer's Reports gives this car a "Recommended" and I totally agree. Although it is not on par with a $50k luxury SUV, it is a good, solid, comfortable car. For the money, I think you would have a hard time finding anything comparable. I've only put 500 miles on the car since I bought it, but it seems to handle very well, and has plenty of pep for freeway driving and passing. If the long-term reliability meets Toyota's legendary standard, then it will be one heck of a great buy.500

2016 RAV 4 LE FWD

I have had this car a month today and it just reached 1,000 miles and I am overall very happy with it. The acceleration is great especially since I just traded in a 2005 Toyota highlander with a V6 figuring that I would have some adjustments to make. The interior is overall spacious and comfortable but yet it does feel a bit cheap. The carpet in the floor board is very thin and the interior is a bit too much plastic looking. I would imagine over time with a family it may start to look a bit banged up but it is just me so hardly anyone will ever sit in the back seat. The rims are nice and sporting looking but are plastic and I wonder how they will hold up especially since I keep a car for a long time. A bad safety feature is when you put the it in park all doors seem to unlock instead of just drivers door. Over all do recommend for sporty styling and comfortable ride.

12/16/16 Update Still enjoying this vehicle However I did discover that the car doors can be programmed so that only the driver's door unlocks when you put the vehicle in park.

Summary:

Noticed the brandnew 2016 rav4 xle pulls to the right strongly after 3 days owning the car with 200 miles. went to the dealer twice and did 2 alignments and cross tire rotation. the service admits the pulls and claim they fixed it the 1st time. however actually nothing is changed. still pulls to the right, not any better. come back again and the same technician tried to align and rotate again. we tested drive and still found it. the dealer’s lead technician mentioned he did everything he can but still cannot fix it. he opened a case to toyota corp to investigate. me and the technician together drove another identical new rav4 (with same msrp) and both of us do not find the pulls on this one. so the problem is just with the one i purchased. this adds a lot of stress and distraction as it needs constant adjusting the steering wheel. it is a safety issue due to the extra distraction. it is not a normal pull. it pulls heavily and even turning the steering wheel a little bit left, within 3 seconds the car will go to the right on every lane of all types of road, consistantly. i owned several other toyota (some are 1 year new) and none of them has this issue. (this is after all realignment!!!) very disappointed with this brand new car and introduces a lot of hassles after spending 27k on it!!! because tire/alignment are not the issues i expect some defective parts, however the dealer say they cannot fix it...

My 2016 rav4 le comes with a side view mirror that has a built in non-adjustable blind spot mirror. this blind spot mirror does not show the blind spot area. it shows an area two lanes away from the vehicle. page 154 of the rav4 owners manual erroneously indicates this additional mirror is a blind spot mirror and has a diagram erroneously showing how it functions.the blind spot mirror is misleading and dangerous. i discussed this with the toyota dealership and they said i needed to get approval from the toyota corp. to replace the glass mirror insert. toyota corp refused my request and told me to file a complaint with nhtsa. attached is a sequence of three pictures showing how the blind spot mirror doesn't show an approaching vehicle until it is too late. this is particularly confusing and dangerous at night. you get to see headlights from two lanes over and not the headlights actually approaching you. a toyota person told me i should have bought the $8000 more expensive 2016 rav4 which is the only way to get the side view mirrors with sensors. this is a bad way to make money. all i want is for toyota to authorize the use of the interchangeable glass mirror inserts used on previous year rav4 vehicles and to stop installing the dangerous side view mirrors with built in non-adjustable blind spot mirrors. the vision is poor on the rav4 and toyota should have reasonably priced the sensors and vision items for all models instead of only making these safety items available on vehicles loaded with high price features. toyota needs to put safety first. i have high regard for toyota and previously purchased three toyota vehicles that were extremely good and lasted a long time. they all had great visibility. the rav4 could have and should have been designed with much better vision.

I have had this car since january 2016. recently, i heard a noise as i apply a brake. i went to the dealer to examine the issue. however, i was told the brakes are doing fine. but the noise has become even louder. i asked one of my friends who bought the same car as mine, a couple month before me. he told me he is experiencing the same problem with his car too. also, he had also encountered with an empty brake fluid tanker after he saw a brake malfunction signal on his dashboard. following, my friend and i started to shop around other friends who have the same car with model year 2014-2016. five out of the seven drivers we questioned had told us that they had already replaced their brakes at least once before they even drive their cars[toyota rav4 2014-2015] for a year/<10,000. i think consumers need to be aware of these situations before deciding to buy these products especially as brakes need to meet the highest safety standards.

The cruise control on my 2016 rav4 le awd with 6 speed automatic transmission is very erratic. at highway speed (60-70 mph) it is fine on a flat road, but at the slightest incline will downshift to fifth, then slam into fourth gear with the engine rpms going up to over 4000. it will then either stay downshifted or constantly shift up and down until i am well over the top of the hill. the dealer said they all do that, so it's normal. i've stopped using the cruise because i'm concerned about possible engine and transmission damage from the harsh shifting and high rpms, but it also is very distracting to the driver which makes it a safety issue. i've complained to "ask toyota" customer service twice. they just say they'll pass along my complaint to the proper department.

2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Review

From Edmunds.com

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is a new model of the popular compact crossover SUV this year. The 2016 Toyota RAV4 was refreshed this year with revised sheet metal and more sound insulation, and the hybrid is an affordable and efficient addition.

Toyota has been a mainstay in the compact crossover SUV segment for a long time, having created it in the first place with the original RAV4 back in 1996. It's also been a leader in the hybrid field with its fuel-sipping Prius and Camry hybrids. Alas, we've had to wait until 2016 for Toyota to decide to finally marry the two together in the form of the new 2016 RAV4 Hybrid.

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid looks very similar to the regular RAV4. Most people won't know you're driving a hybrid.

It turns out that the RAV4 Hybrid is more than just the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its class. It's also the most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive hybrid vehicle you can buy. Fitted with a hybrid powertrain borrowed from the Lexus NX 300h and Toyota Camry Hybrid, the RAV4 Hybrid delivers an EPA-estimated 33 mpg combined, which is 8 mpg more than a regular all-wheel-drive RAV4. Interestingly, it also accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph about a second quicker than its non-hybrid stablemate and provides nearly as much total cargo space.

Toyota has positioned the RAV4 Hybrid as a more premium model among RAV4s, and as such the hybrid is only offered in the highest two trim levels. Yet the hybrid powertrain itself commands very little additional outlay over the equivalent non-hybrid RAV4. The hybrid also benefits from the same updates the regular RAV4 gets this year, including subtly massaged exterior styling and a new suite of high-tech accident-avoidance technologies.

If you like the idea of a miserly small crossover but want to shop around, you'll quickly find the new RAV4 Hybrid is pretty much in a class by itself. The only other hybrid SUV in this price range is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. It does return similar fuel economy to the RAV4 Hybrid but it's considerably slower and not nearly as roomy on the inside. Toyota took its sweet time coming up with the RAV4 Hybrid, but it's worth the wait.

2016 Toyota RAV4 Review

From Edmunds.com
