2016 Toyota Corolla Overview

Data provided by Edmunds

The 2016 Toyota Corolla has a lot to offer if you're in need of reliable and relatively affordable transportation. The 2016 Corolla isn't all that exciting, but it does have impressive fuel economy, lots of legroom and a pleasant ride on the highway. Check out all the details on the 2016 Toyota Corolla including our driving impressions and a list of top rivals.

The Toyota Corolla gets little respect from most car reviewers. It's a soulless appliance, they'll tell you; where's the excitement and flair? But the Corolla is now in its 11th generation. It's been on the market nonstop for almost half a century and ranks as the world's best-selling small sedan. Toyota seems to know more than it gets credit for about its customers and their taste in cars, and the 2016 Corolla is bound to be yet another crowd-pleasing choice. The 2016 Corolla is the latest in a line of top-selling small Toyota sedans first introduced in the U.S. in 1968. Many of the current Corolla's strengths can be found inside. The overall design is fresh and brings, dare we say it, a stylish edge to the traditionally staid small sedan class. The interface for the infotainment system is easy to use thanks to clear displays and well-placed controls. We also like the Corolla's rear seat that provides more legroom than many midsize sedans. Add the Corolla's laudable crash-test scores, high fuel economy and exceptionally high resale value and you have all the ingredients for a car that pleases more than it dismays. Just keep in mind that if you value driver engagement, those reviewers are right -- the Corolla is hardly inspiring from behind the wheel. More dynamic alternatives include the sophisticated and similarly fuel-efficient Mazda 3 and the frugal yet fun-to-drive Ford Focus. Although the Hyundai Elantra isn't that sporty, it offers ample style at an attractive price, and the always-popular Honda Civic and Volkswagen Jetta have been remade into strong all-around contenders. But the Toyota still earns a solid Edmunds "B" rating. Other small cars may steal the headlines, but don't let that distract you from the 2016 Corolla's fundamental competence.

If you're looking for a small sedan that competently covers all the basics, the 2016 Toyota Corolla may be just right for you. We've found it doesn't inspire much excitement, but its sensible blend of fuel economy and value are definitely appealing. Take a closer look at the newest Toyota Corolla.

Largely unchanged, the 2016 Toyota Corolla gets updated Entune audio systems and an S Special Edition variant with a number of minor cosmetic upgrades.

Rough ride

Take a longer test drive, the car to me seems a little noisy and has a rough ride. Other than that the car is fine.

Its an okay car

Its an amazing car in the summertime. It handles good in the rain. The car sucks at accelorating in the first gear but when you get past first gear the car comes alive. But the winter time sucks in it it becomes very slick the car mostely slides around and the car gets stuck in small amount snow (had a lot of problems with that) because the car is so low to the ground. But once again good for summer. The sports button in it doesnt seem to make alot of difference in the cars acceloration. The only thing i have noticed is that it holds the high rpms in the auto part of the tranny. The interior of the car is very user friendly with a good sounding radio. The trunk space is amazing in the car i also love how bright the lights are on the car but tend to get flashed alot because people keep thinking i have brights on. Its a good car to buy good fuel mileage but not a winter car. For winter i would suggest to buy something different.

LOVE my Corolla!

First of all, for those people complaining about the Corolla not accelerating fast enough...it comes with a handy "sports mode" that will turn off the eco feature (if you have it) and that will allow you to accelerate much faster. This car gets AMAZING gas mileage and is a great car in general. Very fancy for a Corolla and quite a bit larger than they used to make them. The seats are very comfy. Huge trunk. Stylish and sporty on the inside and out. Love the touch screen display. Great speakers too. I really have no complaints. Great buy for the money.

Cheapest car buyer wins with Edmunds

Im the cheapest car buyer out there. I dont fall for the gimmicks of cash back, getting jacked on trade in values or being sold something I dont want like extended warranties or floor mats. I walk out of the dealerships on a regualr basis when the price isnt right. NO exceptions. They train these car salesmen on how to sell you stuff. If they can get you to test drive it then they say youve all but bought it. Not me. So when I knew what I wanted in a car, I tried Edmunds. They sent out inquiries to all the dealerships in my area of exactly what i was looking for. Two dealerships came back. One dealership was lying they never had the car but i wont mention their name. The other dealership was 40 miles away had 3 colors to choose from and the Edmunds price guarantee beat the best price I could negotiate myself after working at it for months. I couldt believe it . So the car dealer honored the Edmunds price and i picked my favorite color and I am one happy car buying customer. Edmunds beat everybody credit unions big box stores you name it. And i got it below what the average buyer paid for this exact car. Thanks Santa.....I mean Edmunds!!!!!

Not as good as expected.

I recently purchased this car as a replacement for a 2016 KIA soul that had been flooded. This car is not even half the car the KIA soul is. I have had this car for 6 months and it has 1387 miles on it. The brakes are making noise, the car is very sluggish on acceleration. and it gets not even half what it stated on fuel mileage. I will not be buying another Toyota Corolla. I have owned a Tacoma before and it was better than this car and got better gas mileage. If you are considering this car, go actually drive a KIA soul its much better has better features for same cost or less.

No seat support. View not prcise

Owned a 2003 Corolla S for 12 yrs. Had great back/lumbar support, handled well-one with the car) The 2016 has no back support = back stress! Need a rolled towel or pillow to support. NOT safe-after/during rain-the front windshield FOGS up continuous! Have to use wipers all the time...to clear the fog since defroster or change temperature does not clear it. (2003 Corolla never fogged after rain - had 12 yrs..) Car feels more bulky (not tight with road). Bad view/feel of outer car for turning/parking..so got to check how far pulled up, to park. Never had to issue with any other car! Interior looks cheaper than past models. Front outer grill a bit too much. Speakers not as good as my 2003. ECO mode light comes on = good.

2016 toyota corolla s special edition

I have owned the S Special Edition for about a month now and have put just over 5000 miles on it. My only complaint so far is that it is a bit under powered, especially going up the hills in Pittsburgh, but I'll sacrifice that everyday of the week for the gas mileage. No complaints other than that so far. I think next time I'll go for the Avalon Hybrid to get my power and great gas milage. My car is the S Special Edition with Absolute Red paint, red stitched interior trim and mats, the Smart Key System, Entune™ Audio Plus, moonroof, pure black chrome 17 inch rims with low profile tires.

It does it's purpose very well

This car does EXACTLY what it designed to do...that's to be economical. After 1000 miles.. we learned that being great on gas is all it's good for. Do' not expect great comfort in log trips.. 2.5 hours is about tops for seating comfort.. anything longer than that.. you need to upgrade to something with more bolstered seats. The driving performance is par for a 4cyl Eco-saver. But the steering is surprisingly tight, and handles the corners quite gracefully. Speed above 85mph you will notice air starting to get under the car and the feel of the car sticking to the road starts to fade. Around town driving places this car at the top of the list for sipping on fuel. But, please know you must have patience while in traffic...for this car will NOT jet you in and out of traffic because of sloth-like acceleration. And please, please avoid road rage.. because the horn sounds like a fisher-price toy horn.. so don't embarrass yourself by honking and giving off explicit excerpts. In all the wifey enjoyed it's fuel conservation.. and the daughters liked it's cute style and practicality. It's a great car for city life, and a great car for the child..IF they travel less than 1hour...

42mpg with style and a big backseat

After 50,000 miles I still love mine. I got an S Plus with all options except heated seats. For the price paid (21.5k) it's hard to fault this car. Cruising at 70mph will return 42mpg in a car with a huge backseat and a very comfortable and well-designed cockpit. The front seats are very comfortable and we've taken two 3,000+ mile road trips without complaint. The gauges, steering wheel and control set are tasteful and have a quality feel. I love downshifting with the flappy panels and overall really like the CVT transmission. What's not to like? The doors have kind of a cheap feel, both in hard plastic trim and a cheap tin sound when you close the door. Also, immediate pull out power is a bit lacking with the 1.8 motor/CVT combo. Under hard acceleration, the car will often lag for a moment, and you in time get used to what it can do reliably and will change your driving style to suit. That's it, but I accept both given the price and economy of the car. We've had no unscheduled maintenance, other than a failed fog lamp that was quickly replaced on warranty by our excellent Toyota dealer. After 2 years I still love the style. No regrets. Recommended without hesitation.

Not the new civic.

Got an incredible deal. Absent the deal, I'd have gone with the civic. Got the S PLUS for about 3000$ less than the civic lx. The corolla is exactly what is expected. Nothing more, nothing less. Acceleration is horrible. Noticeable difference from my old 14' civic. Night and day from the new civic. Handling is actually very tight and smooth. The cabin is quiet. Having that extra gear (6) is nice. Makes highway travel less noisy, and obviously more efficient. Will not get up many hills in 6th, but then again neither does my automatic v6 van without downshifting. First few days of driving yielded about 35-36 mpg in mixed Hwy/city. (35lbs in tires) Definitely not pushing it yet. I find the seats comfortable, unlike some of the other reviews. I am 6'5". ???? I've always driven the base model civic, so all the bells and whistles are fun to have... I guess. I'm sure I'll learn to appreciate them. Only problem I have with the car is the lack of power. It is slow! Pretty sure I can beat the car on foot the first 10-20 feet!

Cute little commuter car

I have been driving this for 2 weeks while my Acura is in the collision shop. Great first car for a teen or a great commuter car. For a non-leather interior, the cloth seats are nice. Power windows and mirrors but not power seats. I am 5'4" and have the seat pulled all the way up. Not sure how shorter drivers would do. It has that CVT transmission that you will either love or hate. It's a little hard to get used to. Prefer more acceleration. Great on gas. AWFUL stereo.

Had not drove a Toyota before.

Rented this car for 10 days. I drove it across the country. The power mirror adjustment is on the dash behind the steering wheel. You can not see it while in the seat, so it is difficult to adjust while driving. There was plenty of room on the door to put it in the correct place. Gas mileage could be improved with a higher overdrive gear. The engine was running around 3,000 RPM on the highway. Ideally should be around 2,200 RPM. Car was noisy, but at that level I would expect. Very low tech in the instrumentation/radio. The cigarette lighter does not stay powered to charge your phone while the car is off. The hood release should probably not be paired with the gas opening lever on the floor. I see potential safety issue if you do not realize you pop the hood. Car gets the job done.

Awesome car

Excellent spacing. For a 6" driver this is awesome, I had tried Corolla 10 years back and it was small. Very spacious and has excellent capabilities. Moonroof. Gps etc and all for $19300 invoice in Jan 2016 for a 2016 Model.

Good, Economical car

So far, so good. I chose this model because I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on a basic car to get me back and forth to work but wanted something with a reliable history. I wish the fuel tank was a little larger. Que Sera, Sera.

TERRIFIC TOYOTA AND CUTE COROLLA !

I enjoy my 2016 Corolla very much. It is a cute car and Corollas
have been around for decades. My first car as a teen was my mom's old Corolla
so this is sentimental. They keep their value and do well. My dog Spike likes
the car, too. I saved money by not getting back up camera and cruise control so
that is good. I don’t really need those. The car is great.

Great daily driver!!!!

First off this is a Corolla, not a luxury car. For the segment this car was meant for, its a great car. As a daily driver, 28mpg in the city is really nice compared to 10mpg from my previous suv. The entertainment system is great, especially when paired to your mobile phone. Seat comfort is actually very nice, even the back seats. The only really complaint i have is engine\transmission noise, it might be because its a 1.8L and its trying but its a little noise and you can tell its a 4 cyl. Maybe a little more sound dampening material may help, not sure. There is some road noise on rough roads, could be the tires that come on the car but on the smooth roads its quiet.

Dealer support for this vehicle is excellent.

GREAT CAR!

I have the car less than a month. So far, my only complaints are that the storage compartment in the center console is too small, although its deep...and it's positioned slightly too far back. Bluetooth works great, but although, i can have incoming text read to me (hands-free), the system does not provide an iption for me to reply via voice activation. I cannot comment in fuel economy yet because I have only driven about 200 miles so far. Started with an almost full tank. I was down to 1/2 tank at 179 miles, so I think its pretty good.

Worst seats EVER!!!!

This was just given to me as a company car. I drive about 85k miles a year. So when I first got in it looked really nice lots of cool new option nice layout. until I noticed only one power outlet I have search the whole car very weird in this day and age but not a deal breaker so far. After I started driving home from the office which is two hour drive i made it about an hour down the interstate and had to get out the seat was killing lower back my arms were also tired because the steering is not telescopic and you have to reach for it so the arm rest are only there for decoration. I am only 5'10" but I do believe this car is design for shorter people.
Just to make it clear I am not here to beat on Toyota I travel allot and I drive all types of rental cars and this is by far the worst car I have ever driven Hopefully they can return this monday...

Corolla S cute and efficient!

Just bought my new Corolla. I went from a filull size sedan to this and I am impressed. Its cute sporty looking but comfortable to drive and gets great gas mileage. I am very happy with my purchase which, by the way, was smooth and quick considering buying a car is usually a pain. Thanks to Cox toyota in Burlington, NC.

Brake pedal feels spongy or soft all the time. have had vehicle to dealer 3 times for stuck fuel door (won't open). every time nothing found wrong. tech lubed and tried adjusting fuel door to no avail. stuck fuel door doesn't happen all the time though. this is a safety issue especially for women who are trying to fuel up when on empty. fuel door sticks while stationary. brakes feel spongy when applying brakes while in motion or sitting still. dealer looked at brakes and said they are fine. have read several complaints on these corolla's having brake failure! what's next??? a crash in the making!!! will not buy toyo again.

Summary:

This is a report of brake failure that caused a vehicle colision with injuries. on october 29, 2016, i rented a 2016 toyota corolla from a betterway rent-acar, inc. d/ba budget rent a car of atlanta, at 6509 roswell rd, atlanta, ga 30328. the toyota had 21,619 miles at the time of the rental. at approximately 12:30pm i was driving southeast on jimmy carter blvd in norcross georgia. the weather was clear and sunny and the road was dry. upon departing a traffic light, i accelerated to approximately 20 mph in moderate traffic towards vehicles waiting at the intersection of jimmy carter blvd and rockbridge school road one block away. i began applying the brakes long before reaching the vehicles waiting at the next intersection, however the car's brake action was minimal. as i completely depressed the brake pedal, i heard a clicking sound similar to the engagement of an anti-lock braking system (abs), however there was no significant deceleration. when i fully depressed the brake pedal, i did not hear an increase in engine rpm, the automatic transmission did not downshift, and the vehicle did not accelerate. as a result of the toyota's brake failure, i impacted a stationary vehicle at the intersection of jimmy carter blvd and rockbridge school road. the toyota's airbags did not deploy. there were no skidmarks at the scene of the accident. i suffered injuries as well as multiple occupants in the other vehicle.

Summary:

On june 24th 2016 i purchased a 2016 toyota corolla s. i had 3 minor brake fialures with grinding sounds. i called the dealership on those 3 occasions.the 4th brake failure was a lot worse and i ended up applying the e brake and slide into county line dividing pasco & hernando county florida. enough was enough i called the dealership and said " i need to bring my car in asap because now i have had four brake failures and this one could have killed me if anyone had been coming. this was the 21st of july, i had brought the car in for inspection of my brakes. all they did was take it for a test drive, brought it back and said everything was normal. on september tenth 2016 i got into the right hand turn lane, when i applied the brakes nothing had happened. i continued to apply more and more pressure and still no brakes. i was able to veer enough to the right so i didn't impact the driver side door however the lady behind that car was not as lucky and i impacted her front left pretty much head on. i have called over and over i have sent pictures of my car and the road where there was not even 1 skid mark. i have 9 bulging disc 4 herniated discs. i am literally broke from car rentals dr's appointments and medication that has been very expensive. every time i call i am instructed i will receive a call from their claims/legal department within 30 business days from when they retrieved the data from the car that almost killed me and a poor woman who was taken away in an ambulance. i looked through the data and i am no engineer and i can even see where the brakes failed. to everyone who reads this if you see s newer toyota becareful.

In the last 5 days, i have seen at least 4 toyota corolla's with led headlights on the road at night without their taillights on. i believe the reason for this is that the led headlight option runs all day long, so people assume their lights are automatic? this is a huge safety concern as someone on the road at night cannot see these toyota corolla's in front of them when the taillights are off. in total, i have probably seen at least 40+ corolla's without their lights actually turned on, but the headlights always shine. i try to flash my lights at the drivers to signal the problem, but few realize the issue since they are unaware their lights are not automatically activated.

Component(s): VISIBILITY/WIPER

Crash: NoFire: NoNumber of Injured: 0Number of Deaths: 0
Summary:

Front and rear windshields both distorted/defective. like looking through funhouse mirror glass. the front makes things closer and larger and very wavy from my visual perspective starting at about halfway down the windshield and continuing to the right (to the passenger side). it is a safety issue especially when it makes it appear that large trucks or guardrails are coming at you closer than they are. one should not have to try to compensate while driving for an "optical illusion" as i was told by the service manager who saw the defect in my glass and said that "hopefully i would adjust". when driving, one needs to focus on driving, not having to tell themselves that they should not swerve because something is really not that close. it is a major safety issue that i have not seen in any of my 26 years of driving (or in either of the other 2 corollas that i have owned). the rear windshield is completely blurry and distorted especially between the lines of the defroster. it gives a fuzzy, nauseating effect when going from looking in the rear view mirror to looking forward again. (it is almost like looking at heat shimmering off a very hot surface of a road but permanently built into my rear window.) the front windshield issue is far worse when driving on the highway and things are moving quickly. have brought it to 2 toyota dealerships and contacted tmc and still trying to get issue resolved. 2nd dealership said that because there are defects in some of their other new window glass they will not replace mine although they do see it and acknowledge it. they said to replace would be putting in the same glass. a windshield repair service told me that this is not true and that i should not be driving around with glass like this!

2016 Toyota Corolla Review

From Edmunds.com
