2016 Subaru Outback Overview

Data provided by Edmunds

Roomy and surprisingly capable, the 2016 Outback is a well-thought-out alternative to traditional car-based SUVs, a market segment that the original Outback helped create years ago. Few SUVs blend the carlike demeanor of a traditional wagon with the practicality of an SUV as well as the 2016 Subaru Outback. If you're looking for SUV abilities in a vehicle that is not quite so SUV-ish, the 2016 Subaru Outback is a smart choice.

Subarus are sometimes considered quirky cars, and you could probably say this about the 2016 Subaru Outback. Here's a midsize wagon based on a family sedan (the Legacy) that has a raised ground clearance, all-wheel drive and plastic body cladding. In today's cookie-cutter automotive marketplace, this is the equivalent of wearing paisley bell bottoms to an IBM boardroom meeting. But consider us fans of quirky because there's plenty to like with the latest Outback. In actuality, Subaru redesigned the Outback last year with an eye toward making it feel more like a mainstream car, and we appreciate the automaker's efforts: The hard plastics and oddball ergonomics of the old car were replaced with higher-quality materials and a more sensible control layout, the technology interface became more advanced and fuel economy has improved. The Outback's safety resumé has grown as well, and this year's model has new emergency assistance connectivity through Subaru's Starlink system. Based on the Legacy sedan, the Subaru Outback is one of the few midsize wagons available. But for all its newfound class, the 2016 Subaru Outback still likes to play in the mud. You might be surprised given its wagon-like profile, but with all the mechanical bits tucked up under its sheet-metal skirts, the Outback boasts 8.7 inches of ground clearance, more than many truck-based SUVs. Combine that with the Outback's roomy seating, generous cargo bay and relatively low load-height roof and you've got an ideal family outdoor recreational vehicle. Few cars compete with the Outback head-on. Volvo's XC70 comes the closest. It's more luxurious but also more expensive. The Audi Allroad and Volvo V60 Cross Country are also similar in concept, but they can't match the Outback's interior space. If you're not keen on the Outback's wagon body style or performance, your next best bet would be a small or midsize crossover SUV such as the Honda CR-V, Jeep Cherokee or Subaru's own Forester. These are all good vehicles, but if foul-weather traction and outdoor-going individuality are the top attributes you're seeking, the 2016 Subaru Outback should definitely be on your short list.

With generous cargo capacity and a roomy interior, the 2016 Subaru Outback wagon is a good option for families, especially those who enjoy the occasional outdoor adventure.

Having been completely redesigned just last year, the 2016 Outback gains some additional equipment. The optional Subaru Starlink system adds two packages of connected car applications, adding functionality such as automatic crash notification and stolen vehicle recovery, along with Internet-connected apps such as Stitcher. The steering has been retuned for better feel, and Limited models get retuned shock absorbers for a smoother ride. Safety features on the Outback now include optional lane departure intervention.

Awesome road warrior with poor nav system

I traded in a 2002 Ford Explorer, which I loved dearly and had served me well, for this fully loaded 2016 Outback. I need a vehicle that is good for road trips, and the Outback exceeded all expectations. It can handle any weather and road conditions. It is comfortable and roomy. It is smooth and capable on the interstates, but yet has off-road capability as well -- not as good as the Explorer, but good enough for what I would ever encounter. I came to absolutely love the adaptive cruise control. Visibility and sight lines are superb. Temperature control using just full automatic is perfect. All this and the overall price is very reasonable, and gas mileage is good too (especially compared to the Explorer). But, like I said, I need a road car, and I have to mark this one down a grade because of the very poor navigation system. They are so over-safety conscious that they do not allow you to look ahead at the next few turns, a serious drawback in unfamiliar areas, and especially when the system wants to re-route you due to sensing traffic issues. Also, it was hard to find the controls to limit this re-routing function, which is overly sensitive at the factory settings. Also, the maps need updated, as even a well-established interstate in existence for over 10 years was not located correctly, gave me wrong directions to get on it. There were also bugs in the system, freeze-ups, although there is a factory "fix" for the system part if you ask the dealer about it. Honestly, I prefer to take along my 10 year old Garmin rather than use this car's navigation system. And I could not find a place on the Subaru website to give "constructive criticism" feedback on it, like they only want to know positive stories. I would give this car a solid A+ but for the navigation system, which is important to me in my road car. I also have another car, my little convertible, so only use this one about half the time.

Just the right mix

Outback brings all the good factors of a wagon and a suv into one platform. The safety features are without peer.
The handling on the road says its ready for long distance excursions. The visibility exceeds other cars we have owned.
Looking forward to many road days in the years to come.

Love my Outback

Own two Outbacks (2008 & 2016)now and love them both. For our use, they are the best car on the road. The 2016 has a nicer interior and ride than the 2008. Finally found a great dealership to buy from (Classic Cadillac & Subaru in Atlanta). They were easy to deal with at the point of purchase and provided wonderful service for the recent sterring column recall.

Further improvement of noise-isolation.

They must check noise isolation and automatic door lock. When i drove on the road , the more foreign noise is heard inside the car. We all expect 2017 new noise isolation improved one and manuel locking looks like 15th century ago , its better to replace with AUTOMATIC LOCK . All the best . thanks.

2016 Outback Issues....

I purchased my 2016 Subaru Outback in September of 2015. After about 5 months a strange noise started to occur from the back of the car for which I thought was the muffler. The noise was intermittent so the dealership could not diagnose the problem but told me to premium gas, fuel additive as it could be engine pinging. Finally they did hear the noise and stated it was very loud evaporator pump for which they were going to replace. After picking up the car, they had changed out the evaporator valve assembly and added extra insulation. The noise is still ongoing and the noise has waken my baby up from a sleep, made people come outside from their camping trailers where fans were on to heat, but again I am too sensitive and am hearing this. To this point there has been no resolve, and now run the risk of loosing thousands of dollars if I have to get rid of the car. I have reached out to Subaru America with minimal help outside of listening and still no resolve or true assistance. The local dealership is trying all they can but are at the point looking to National Subaru to help diagnose or provide guidance which appears to be lacking.
People like the look of the car and the features for which I agreed with but tell them my issues and they have moved onto look at other cars.

Test Drove Everything!

We test drove 23 vehicles. This was the only one that 100% of my family of 6 agreed on for comfort. Most other vehicles for comparable features wear 10K more. Hyundai Santa Fe Sport was a close second choice. Cargo space was rock-in but ultimately backseat comfort and gas mileage of Subaru won out.

6 months in

I am still a happy camper with my Outback. The undersized power is still a bother at times, but I have to admit it is quick to pick up initial speed, but not the best when wanting to go from 45 to 60. No quality issues with the car.

Great experience so far

I have had my 2016 Outback for about two months now. So far zero complaints, and while I have not had winter to test the car, the heat & heated seats clearly work very well. I know plenty of others in Maine with 2016 Outbacks and zero complaints about heating, or winter features. I suspect that the previous review is a one off issue. Fuel economy so far has been averaging around 32MPG, with most driving on 35-50mph roads and not much traffic. Very comfortable and relatively quiet ride, and a well thought out car. Lots of space!

A car nut in a quest for the next best thing

I am a caraholic. I am in constant search of my next car. I love the Subaru and here is why: EYESIGHT is an extraordinary bargain. Cross-traffic alert system takes so much stress out of backing out of a parking space, I never knew the anxiety I had until it was alleviated. Blind spot monitors are very useful and, again, ease my mind when changing lanes. Adaptive cruise control is very useful and makes road trips stress-free, and the lane-keeping assist steers the car back into the middle of the lane. The rear seats recline. The roof rails have built-in cross rails. The cargo area is huge, but could use nets on the sides.
What do i wish it had? The passenger seat needs to be height-adjustable just like every VW ever made. All cars should give up their proprietary interfaces and just give us CarPlay or license Ford's Sync3. An option for a panoramic moonroof would be nice, too. Diesel option would give us low-end torque.

My biggest gripe? Make the passenger seat height adjustable.

Great overall car with just a couple design issues

I really like my 2016 Subaru Outback. It rides very well, even in the rain. It's roomy, comfortable, great family car, and reasonably priced. The safety features can't be beat. P.S. If you have an iPod Classic, don't try to get it to work with the infotainment system - it won't! Just buy an iPod touch.

Pros: Drives like it is on dry pavement, even in the rain. Eyesight features are great (cruise control that speeds up/slows down as needed to keep a safe distance from other cars, automatic braking to avoid collisions)

Cons: Acceleration from a stop is not smooth. Climate control layout could be better (2 buttons for the fan instead of a dial?) Infotainment system won't work with an iPod Classic.

Our dream car!

It's not HUGE.. feels like it though. Don't buy a Subaru if you must have fancy electronics or luxury. It's bare necessities just enough to make it a 2016 vehicle.
Safety, reliability and value is why we got this. AWD, road control, off-road capability enhances the value from just being a commute car.

I personally prefer Gen 4 design, but Subaru made the Gen 5 more polished and refined looking.

We have had it only for 3-4 weeks but already took it to the mountains once.

Perfect!

The Subaru Outback is a great value. Safety features, in dash electronics, road stability, reliability...well, I could go on and on. We now have five Subaru Outbacks in our family, from a 2011 to a 2016. All have been outstanding with no repairs. Regular maintenance is all that has been required.
Comfortable for long trips. Useful for in town driving.
Just get one and be happy for years to come.

Literally love this car!

Literally love this car. Great exterior and interior. Technology is a wow. Lane assist and eyesight work great and intuitive. Plenty of space including the second row is great for adults and really liking the heated front and back seats. Engine has reachable headlight cases and battery which is a big plus. Lots of compliments on the wheels and overall look of the vehicle. Expect to keep this one a long time.

New is better!

Our new 2016 Outback is outstanding! It is an incredible improvement over our 2011! I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in a practical, comfortable, reliable and safe vehicle!

After having our Outback for 8 months we are completely satisfied. Subaru did an outstanding job designing the 2016. It is solid, safe and extremely well made. i would highly recommend it to anyone interested in a vehicle in the category!

My only complaint is that the heater could be quicker to kick in.

I just purchased a 2016 ob 2.5i premium. i have had the car for a week and a half. on friday i decided to wash my car for the first time. i started on the drivers side, raised the drivers side wiper, went around the front of the car and raised the passenger side wiper. i then washed around the car. when i went to put the drivers side wiper down it hit the passenger side wiper and slapped it down onto the windshield. an hour later i noticed a crack coming from the passenger side. i did the "pen test" and found a small depression under the wiper. no rock hit my windshield, it would have had to pass through the wiper. thats impossible. because i was just freaking amazed that it could of happened i raised the passenger wiper and let it come down on the windshield to see what would happen. it put a second crack in the windshield, not one emanating from the first but a whole new crack. im taking it to my dealer tomorrow.

Crash: NoFire: NoNumber of Injured: 0Number of Deaths: 0
Summary:

Driving in the center of my lane on a wet highway. cruise control on at 65 mph. lane sway on. the car acted as if the lane sway activated and gave a strong steering wheel bump like it does if you are close to the side road stripe. i was dead center in my lane, and there was no reason for it to bump the steering. it did this to me three times within a ten mile drive. after the third time i turned the lane sway off and was soon driving in town and it did not do it again. my wife says sometimes while coming to a stop at a light, the car will pull very hard and abruptly to the left. the car has 3400 miles on it, so there should be nothing wrong with brake pads or rotors.

Takata recall-wanted to purchase a 2016 subaru outback 3.6l, and after multiple inquiries, finally was told that takata airbags still being used in the passenger front seat whereas other manufacturers' airbags are now being used in drivers and side curtain parts of the auto. so passenger front seats are still vulnerable. we would like to know if this mix of airbag manufacturers is known to all consumers so they know the risk they are purchasing. we declined to buy the subaru outback this year until we find a manufacturer who uses no takata airbags.

2016 subaru outback while driving car on i-95 , noticed 4-4 in. crack in lower driver side windshield ,after investigating noticed small pit size of pencil point where the crack started. crack kept growing. next day continued my trip on i-95 , about 3 hrs later another crack appeared in the upper center of the windshield , after investigating noticed small pit the size of pencil point where the crack started. same as first crack i did not notice any debris hitting the windshield . i researched on the internet and found numerous similar incidents with subaru outbacks. i believe this is a major safety issue with the glass in the windshield

Date Complaint Filed: 02/03/2016

Component(s): VISIBILITY/WIPER

Crash: NoFire: NoNumber of Injured: 0Number of Deaths: 0
Summary:

During a recent trip to florida, the front windshield on my new 2016 subaru outback developed over half a dozen small pits in the exterior glass surface from contact with very tiny pebbles. the tiny pebble strikes should not have caused such pits based on my extensive driving experience. i believe there to be a defect in the glass itself, making it unusually brittle. the pebble strikes occurred while driving at low speeds on highway off ramps. the temperature outside during the pebble strikes, which took place over several days of driving, ranged from 60 to 85 degrees f. the dealer examined the windshield and said there was nothing inferior about it.

Date Complaint Filed: 03/16/2016

Component(s): WHEELS

Crash: NoFire: NoNumber of Injured: 1Number of Deaths: 0
Summary:

While driving on the leftist lane (four-lane in total) of a busy highway, i suddenly felt that my car lost balance and ran toward/along the guardrail in the middle of highway, which slowed my car in several seconds and saved my life. later i found that my left front wheel was totally gone (not only the tire, but also the whole wheel system). see my photos taken on the scene. it was a clear day with great visibility and there were many cars on the highway. the road was dry, straight and smooth, with only guardrails in the middle of highway and no concrete dividends. there was nothing on the road that i can hit first before the wheel came off. the airbag was not on. i did nothing wrong (no citation and ticket). this is a brand new car i bought just 20 days ago. how could a brand new car lose one wheel while driving within 20 days of purchase? this might indicate a mechanical problem or a defect with the car. of course, subaru denied nothing wrong with the car. for a terrible accident like this, i could have been killed. a thorough investigation will help to save lives.

Date Complaint Filed: 03/22/2016

Component(s): POWER TRAIN

Crash: NoFire: NoNumber of Injured: 0Number of Deaths: 0
Summary:

Stationary vehicle rolls back significantly when on any incline when in gear. it has an automatic transmission which rolls in drive and reverse. the dealer said all vehicles roll when in gear. i have owned 13 vehicles in my life, the only vehicles that would roll in gear were manual transmission vehicles which is why the last 8 vehicles i have owned have been automatic. the dealer denied this was a problem but on the subaru outback forum, this is a known problem for at least the past two iterations of this vehicle. the first occasion the vehicle rolled back on a good slope for at least three feet and then the tires spun when i depressed the accelerator. the hill assist feature on this car may have been of assistance but i was unfamiliar with it. the hill assist feature should not have to be engaged during normal driving. had this slippage happened at a stoplight, the vehicle would have rolled into another and caused damage to both vehicles. absolutely dangerous and unacceptable. the transmission acts like a manual without a clutch.

2016 Subaru Outback Review

From Edmunds.com
