2013 Ford Focus ST Overview

Data provided by Edmunds

Edmunds.com reviews the 2013 Ford Focus ST, providing authoritative buying advice, pricing, available options, photos, specs and safety information.

It's understandable if you find yourself thinking of the 2013 Ford Focus ST as an exotic model imported from Europe. The sleek lines of the bodywork surely suggest innovative European style. A 252-horsepower turbocharged engine with direct fuel injection surely suggests exotic European technology. A poised, comfortable ride combined with agile, fluent handling surely suggests European tuning. But as it turns out, the 2013 Ford Focus ST is built in Michigan, and it can be had at a discount price, just as you'd expect from anything made in America. As small cars have lately taken a more premium aspect in appearance, so, too have these cars also morphed into the kind of high-performance packages that appeal to grown-ups as well as kids. The Honda Civic Si, Mazdaspeed 3, Mini Cooper S, Subaru WRX and Volkswagen GTI all have become respectable as well as fast, and the Ford Focus ST takes its place among them. To be sure, the Focus ST makes its mark in this group with performance, thanks to its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, quick-shifting six-speed manual transmission and clever electronics that help make this powerful front-wheel-drive car tractable and easy to drive quickly. Yet more surprising is the availability of features and options that you would expect only from a car with a far grander price, notably the MyFord Touch and Sync electronics interface for the audio and navigation systems. Just like the Ford Focus itself, the 2013 Ford Focus ST looks and feels as if it should be priced higher, which is just about the highest compliment that can be paid to any automobile. In a way, it offers the best of both worlds offered by the GTI and Mazdaspeed. For performance, it keeps up with the Mazda and outperforms the GTI. And for refinement, it matches the VW and bests the Mazda. It's also much more practical than a Cooper S. The Focus ST does have a couple drawbacks -- namely the finicky-to-use MyFord Touch interface and the lack of an automated transmission -- but overall we think it's raised the bar for the hot-hatch class.

The 2013 Ford Focus ST delivers performance like a hot hatchback from Michigan, yet doesn't forget to deliver the poise and polish of a fine European sedan.

For 2013, the Ford Focus ST is an all-new model.

Wow

I have 29k miles on the car. I have had 0 problems making it the most reliable car to date I have owned. I was pleased to see that all the panels lined up as there was a bit of conversation about ill fit and finish. I use this car on the hiway primarily but when it comes time to drive it on the twisty's it runs hard. If I had any changes I would make the bottom 5 gears a little closer ratio.

Owned for 3 months

2013 Focus St Tuxedo Black with ST2 trim package. Love the recaros in the car, everyone at my work thinks it's a race car essentially. Handling is very crisp and exiciting anytime I see twisty roads the car teases you to HAMMER down and hear the brrrrrrrrrrrruuuuup noise it produces. Turbo is lagless, cannot tell it's turbocharged almost. The power is on at 2k and holds to redline for me. Day to day driving it's very good on gas and the 6 speed allows me to shift into 6th gear at 35mph without being boggy.
Motor mounts from the factory were a bit too soft for the power this car lays down, however ford has parts on order and a redesign to fix that.

Too Much Fun

I purchased a 2013 Focus ST this summer after researching choices for over a year. Looking for a fun car before I become too old to enjoy (61). Wow. Top notch handling, quick acceleration, smooth shifting, and a nice exhaust sound make this car a joy to drive. Pleasantly surprised with comfort of Recaro seats after reading reviews expressing discomfort. I am 5'10" and 184lbs. Seats are comfortable even on trips I have taken up to 8 hours. Another cool feature that I had not heard of during my research is auto brake which engages at stops on hill so no drifting backwards. Took awhile to get use to but a nice feature. I bought the car with 41,000 miles and added another 4,000. Car looks and drives like new. Fuel economy ok coming in around 29-30 mpg. Relatively tight fit in back seat. My 96 Mustang GT convertible sat in garage most of summer as the Focus was my go to car for a fun ride.

Bargain family Ferrari

No, I'm serious. I have owned a Ferrari 360 Modena, a Nissan GTR, Z-cars, you name it. Economic issues forced me to keep my budget low, and this car was amazing. It handles and brakes like some of my best sports cars. No rocketsled acceleration, but brisk enough to be fun. And it still holds five, tons of cargo if necessary, and is just a hoot to drive. And surprisingly it gets almost as many looks as the GTR, though definitely not as many as the Ferrari! It cost nothing to own and nothing to run and I had nothing break in over 40,000 miles except wearing out tires, which is so much fun it's worth it. The only reason I would part with this car is to get a Ford focus RS because of the all-wheel-drive and of course better acceleration. This car is a winner, and the design team deserves praise.

Update 2/2/2017: Still in love with my car. First "wear" repair was new rear brakes/rotors ($450). Odd that the rears wore out first, but I wonder if it's because of the stability control kicking in to avoid understeer in hard cornering? Anyway, still a bargain repair, as the same one in my GT-R would have been a couple grand!!! I will only part with this car to get the RS because I live in Maine and could use the AWD. I think it's also a great option that they offer a spare set of winter wheels and tires for the car so you can really enjoy the best of what it offers year-round without having to demount, remount and rebalance your tires....

2013 Focus ST-3 ownership review after 2.5 years

This is really an amazing car, a bit over priced if you buy all the options. You don't need Ford My Touch. It is just flashy and unnecessary. Anyone with a cell phone does not need navigation in their Focus ST. The Nav is difficult to use, and you have to be stopped if you are going to input info into it. Its not accurate either, I never use it. The Recaro buckets are beautiful to look at and make the car appear to be an awesome race machine, however if you are a male and you are over 150 lbs and taller than 5'7" you will be uncomfortable. very narrow seat backs..digs into shoulders. I had some issues with the car stalling at red lights and stop signs and it took Ford a year to fix it. My right side head light bobbles over bumps, Ford can't fix it. Vibrates a lot with the AC on at a stop. OK, now for the good stuff...quick, nimble, exciting, handles like its on rails, stops on a dime in emergencies, and can switch lanes before you can blink your eyes. Gets reasonable mileage as I avg 31mpg city and hwy combined. The turbo spools up nicely for me and I enjoy the passing power it has on the street.

Best car I've ever owned

I've had a very long history of getting bored with my cars after a couple years and trading them in. I've owned and driven more cars than a 32 year old rightly should. So it's come as a huge surprise to my friends and I that after 2+ years of ownership, I'm still madly in love with my Ford.

It's a blast to drive (best FWD car I've ever driven next to the Fiesta ST), practical (I fit a 60 inch flat screen in box no problem), and economical (I average 31mpg+ on road trips).

In addition the car has been 100% reliable, my Ford dealer here in Washington has given me the best customer service I've ever had, and the ST community is great!

I look forward to driving my Focus ST for years to come.

P.S. Ford invited me to the ST Octane Academy in Utah for free just for buying one. One of the best experiences of my life.

Affordable performance

A great test of a performance car is driving on Italian roads. You pretty much get everything thrown at you, from super fast autostrade winding thru the mountains, extremely narrow roads with severe switchbacks, and fun sweepers thru Tuscany. Those are the places I've been driving my 2013 ST (the base model), from the Dolomites to the Amalfi Coast, and chasing a souped up Megane up the side of Vesuvius (and over taking him). This car does all of it well. It's engine is remarkable, the stearing precise, and the transmission a joy. Any complaints I have are usually over shadowed by the fun of driving this car. Point it exactly where you want to go and it will, happily.

My biggest issue with this car is the entertainment system and the tech interface. I have constant trouble with integrating my iPod or phone to listen to music. Interacting with the menu for mileage, etc., is glitchy as well.

With that said, this is still a joy to drive after nearly 3 years and around 50k miles. Gets great gas mileage, if you take it easy and keep the turbo needle from moving.

Best hot hatch value for the money

Total adrenaline rush to drive; fighter-jet cockpit; super fast and powerful; excellent turbo boost design; decent gas mileage even stomping on the go pedal; best-in-class handling; intelligent design inside and out by Ford SVT; great looks and exhaust sound; quality Sony sound system; A+ race red paint; perfectly matched with Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tires; practical as daily commuter with the ability to blow nearly everyone away on the open road.

Absolutely the best value for the money out of all the hot hatches on the market today, bar none.
Ford hit a grand slam with this car.

Only wish: the larger rotors on the front brakes should have also been put on the rear ones.

New car

I purchased this car new off the lot and love just about everything about it. Considering my previous car was an 06 Cobalt SS with a little over 300hp I can say without a doubt this car hits the mark for me. The electronic torque-steer assist is a blessing in my opinion and because the car is so quiet at driving speed the sound at WOT is just that much more exciting. The controls seem a little overwhelming for someone that went from a "prehistoric" design that you can find in the cobalt but realistically this car was built for the new generation and it shows. Also, the ride quality without the Recaros is extremely nice. Just remember the car was developed to handle so road feel is a given.

Motivation to drive

I love my little ST3.
I tested everything in this class (Mazdaspeed3, WRX, GTI, Rallyart etc.) and bought the Ford because I found it had the best balance of ride and handling, best fuel economy and was overall the best value.
I highly recommend the Recaros that come with the ST3, they don’t have the car color inserts but instead are all black leather, heated and just the a great place to enjoy what this car has to offer. I’m 6’1” 180lbs and they fit me perfectly. What is astounding to me is this car’s ability to match what I’m doing at any instant.
It goes from a smooth, quiet, friendly little commuter to a raging lunatic at will. The power delivery is linear, direct and controllable.

Expensive disappointment

I'll probably never buy a Ford again after this disaster. I bought it looking for something fun, relatively good on gas mileage and a standard transmission.

Unfortunately while it does have some impressive power and handling, it otherwise was a huge disappointment. I'll try to encapsulate the downsides here...

First, the body. Most of the exterior is made of plastic and clipped together. Body lines especially where it meets the bumper began sagging after the first year. I also had the misfortune of running over a groundhog and bot the front and rear bumpers exploded like it was made of legos.

The brake dust on the wheels was horrendous. Within a few miles they would be coated black like coal.

Blind spots in both changing lanes and backing up are the worst I've ever experienced in 20 years of driving. I cannot tell you how many close calls I had changing lanes and I'm a relatively safe/conservative driver.

Storage space is almost non existent in both the rear and front (holders etc) interior is comprised of hard plastic and cheap feeling.

Seats and ride and stiff, tight and painful. After about 40 minutes it's not an option not to stop and take a break especially if you're over 5'8" and or 150 lbs.

The gear ratio is so close that while it'll launch you up to speed in a hurry, driving around town is frusterating. Also 6th gear at highway speed still leaves you at high rpm's and is exceptionally noisey.

Winter driving even with winter performance tires is an adventure. The car is way too light and will slide probably with chains on. I've driven rwd cars with better handling.

AC and heat is more like a climate out of control system. The heat was Luke warm at best...AC never really got cold after numerous servicings. Controls cheap looking and feeling.

Sync system was fair but not intuitive. I was able to tolerate it until after about 8 months I had to pull the fuse for it under the glove box to reset it on a monthly basis. It's not an easy fuse to get to, I'll leave it at that.

My last frustration is its next to impossible to maintain yourself. The airfilter box is made of cheap plastic and requires the filter for structural integrity. Changing to oil is nearly impossible for the regular joe.

If you want something fast that sucks in the snow, buy a mustang...but I'd recommend avoiding Ford's altogether.

Love my ST

Have owned since 4/13 and have 16K fun miles already. Lots of highway and in traffic miles. Love the way you pick a gear with smooth shifting gear box, punch and go. This from someone who owned a Z06 Vette for 8 years. With hwy miles I avg 29 mpg overall. Overall quality is solid. Have full option set, Recaros, sunroof, Navi, etc. still under $30k

My new Focus ST

Really nice car, well built and fun to drive.
Shifter is smooth with excellent position and clutch has a good feel.
I kept the price down with a base model and sun roof the only extra.
This avoids the Ford My Touch complications and the base seats are fine.
Of course the Recaros have more sex appeal, but I needed to save a little.
I drive it in the Northeast so I added all season tires as it's a daily driver.

If you want a hatch with a manual tranny; this is the car.

Great car, Horrible execution, Horrible customer service and Horrible dealer network.

My car: an early build (02/03/2013) ST2 trim with Nav and without sunroof. This is a really fun car to drive. Performance, a solid "good", but when factoring in the whole vs it's competition I think it's a "great." The interior layout needs improvements and storage for the driver. HOWEVER, I've had quality issues and workmanship issues with the car from day one. The car has been out of service appox. 100 days since I took delivery on Feb. 13 (today is 9/14/2013). The car came out of the factory with a miss aligned drivers door. Unfortunately I don't have the space here to give full details, but Ford Customer Service has not been responsive in actually address the issues and I'm very upset.

Freeway Steering Difficult

First of all, I love my new ST2.
My only complaint, and I'm not sure if this is the car or the Goodyear Asymmetrical 2 tires, is that while driving on the highway at normal cruising speeds the car seems to pull and drift in both directions.
Not the yaw or the alignment but I can't keep it pointed straight.
When I ever so slightly move the steering wheel to compensate the car over compensates and I find it drifting in the other direction.
Is this a calibration problem?
Tire problem?
It makes for some really uncomfortable highway driving..like I'm fighting the steering wheel.

Focus ST

I'd say the Focus ST is a split between the GTI and what I've heard of the MPS 3.
I've owned a GTI but I have not owned a MPS 3.
I use the GTI as a baseline against the Focus.
The GTI is definitely more refined.
The best thing about the car is the powertrain for sure.
Everything else is secondary.

The reason I got it was because hatches are way more utilitarian than trunks, for the size of the car.
Americans don't seem to understand that.
Also the gas mileage is better than what I'm coming from (Genesis Coupe v6), and I already owned a GTI.

LOVE THIS CAR

Did a lot of research on hatchbacks, read all these rave reviews about this little hot hatch. They are totally spot on. BMW quality interior, smooth shifter, no turbo lag at all, I don't have any issues with torque steer, I laugh out loud when I'm taking a curve. It's a fast car, but I find it also a perfectly well behaved commuter car. You can take it easy or drive it hard. After owning M3s, S4s, and a 911 I can say this is a very respectable performer and dollar for dollar an amazing value. Can't believe what Ford has done with this car, bravo to the engineers.

Very Nice Hot-hatch

I bought a Base Focus ST without any additional options. My main concern was to have bluetooth connectivity as an option which the car comes standard with.
As far as the interior is concerned, it's slightly cramped compared to rivals and does not have as much "cubby" space as other cars. This can be averted though through getting the ST2 package trim. The materials are all soft touch and feel like they are from higher quality car.

The ride and road noise are fantastic for this car. Any outside noise (including tire noise) is very muted and the ride while firm and somewhat busy, abosrbs manholes and bridge joints beautifully.
The engine is powerful and handling spot on as well!

Denver to LA and Back - ST3 is Excellent

Fun, Practical, Comfortable -
Even after 2 fifteen hour days, I still want to get into the car just to drive it!
Driving this car is addicting.

The car pull the passes in 6th gear, no need to shift.
It still has torque to spare so even when someone cuts you off, you can still accelerate. Just unbelievable.

When taking a turn too fast in the snow, the stability system allows the back end swing out a bit. Then apply power and the car pulls strait. Too much fun.
I will have to take it to a tack when I put back on the summer tires.

That sums it up with this car - it's performance exceeds what you can use on the street, but it hasn't sacrificed comfort or refinement.

The 1st 500 Miles

After almost three months of waiting on the car to be built due to delays in parts the car arrived.

I ordered my Performance Blue ST with the ST3 package and a moon roof which means it came with everything.
Its a very spacious car for a compact and comfortably seats four adults.
The Recaro Seats in the front take a little getting used to but are very comfortable.
The 6 speed manual which is standard is one of the best manuals I ever driven (a 1968 Corvette, a 72 pinto, 92 storm, 04 Corvette, you get the idea I've driven a few manuals).
The Turbo really does provide the extra punch to make this car really fun to drive.
GAS MILEAGE so far 25 combined MPG (80% highway) 87 octane.

Summary:

I purchased my used 2013 ford focus on august 4th 2015. since then it has been in the shop four times to address the dual clutch system being faulty. the car will shutter between gears, struggle to accelerate, it will roll backwards/forwards at stops while the car is still in drive and when i am going to park. it also will rev up randomly and almost lurch forward when its trying to shift. i bring the car in and they "fix" it, when i pick it up from the shop it runs smoothly for a short period of time before it starts all over again.

Summary:

My 2013 focus titanium electronic rack & pinion failed. it occurred without any prior warning on a busy interstate. miracle without an accident. 49,000 miles. i have no warranty.. my research shows many with similar stories and no recall? this is a serious safety issue.quoted $1800 to repair. so that my car will simply steer? recalls happen for many reasons and to think it hasn't happened for a sudden loss of a vehicles steering in incomprehensible. to repeat, all withoout any warning. no dash light or message! i changed lanes at 60 mph and it would not respond so that i could make the needed correction to not continue in to oncoming traffic. getting it safely to the shoulder was physically difficult and extremely dangerous.

Component(s): FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Crash: NoFire: NoNumber of Injured: 0Number of Deaths: 0
Summary:

I have had nothing but problems with this car and have only owned it since july of 2014. the computer module in my transmission has already had to be replaced due to shuddering, gears shifting incorrectly, and eventually dying while driving. now my car is in the shop, again. this time for code p0456, which relates to the purge valve canister and evap system. a few weeks ago, i noticed my check engine light came on and had someone run my codes. whenever i put gas in the car, it takes several tries before my car will start. i have to pump the gas while starting the car in order for it to actually start. after i get gas, the car will sometimes die while i am driving...which has happened while i was driving on the highway in the middle of rush hour traffic. this will cause a major accident for someone some day...maybe even a fatal accident. the fuel gauge also started reading incorrectly at the same time. i will have a 1/4 tank of gas, but it will register that i have 3/4 full and is only momentarily corrected when you turn the car off and restart it. i have researched many blogs and forums and have discovered that many focus owners are having the same exact problems with these issues. my car is in the shop right now and i am waiting for them to call with the final diagnosis. it isn't right for ford to know that they have faulty cars out there and not pay to fix the problems. ford needs to recall this.

Component(s): POWER TRAIN | VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

Crash: NoFire: NoNumber of Injured: 0Number of Deaths: 0
Summary:

The vehicle stutters, jerks, and stalls in low gears. when we press the gas from a stationary position the car fails to move forward on many occasions. if it does move forward then the gears make a grinding sound. it poses a risk to us when we have to move across oncoming traffic, especially on left hand turns at stoplights when we have a yield sign. the car has stalled out on a few occasions leaving us vulnerable to cars travelling at high velocities towards us. this is an unsafe car and we plan to hold ford accountable for human and property damage should it occur due to this defect.

Summary:

While attempting to turn right on two occasions today my wife's 2013 ford focus had no power steering. i have read many complaints about this issue and am very curious as to why ford has not done anything about it? will somebody have to crash and die for the motor company to accept responsibility? there have been several problems with this vehicle since we bought it and the fact that we purchased it practically brand new it is concerning to have so much go wrong.
