2016 Dodge Grand Caravan Overview

Data provided by Edmunds

The 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan is priced right and chock full of handy features, but its lack of refinement keeps it a notch below the Japanese-brand competition in the minivan segment.

Although three-row crossover SUVs have grown in popularity over the last decade, they still can't beat a minivan for third-row comfort and an abundance of cargo room, And for the price, the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan is hard to beat for the budget-minded buyer. The Grand Caravan is all about value. While the base AVP and SE don't come with a whole lot of standard features, they're also the most affordable way to get into a new minivan. Comparably equipped, the "DGC" is still typically thousands less than other minivans, and nearly every model comes with second-row Stow 'n Go seats that fold right into the floor just by pulling a lever. In addition, niceties such as a rear DVD system and a smattering of safety features are available on higher trims to keep occupants safe and entertained. Some versions of the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan feature unusually sporty styling cues for a minivan. This Dodge minivan isn't all sunshine and roses, however. Its orientation toward value shows in the cabin, where materials quality is notably lower than those found in competing minivans. It's also apparent in the way the Grand Caravan drives. The DGC's ride can get a little rough at times, and its engine and transmission aren't as refined or responsive as those found in other top minivans. Heading that list of top choices are the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna. The all-stars of the minivan world, they have more compliant ride qualities, higher-quality cabins and more high-end features available. Also worth considering is the 2016 Kia Sedona, which competes well against the Grand Caravan in terms of value. And if a more luxurious experience is what you're after, the Grand Caravan's mechanical sibling, the 2016 Chrysler Town & Country, may suit your needs better. But overall the Dodge Grand Caravan is extremely competitive on price, and that may be enough to give it the edge in your shopping decision.

The 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan offers a lot of features and versatility in an inexpensive package. Overall, the Grand Caravan's refinement is lacking compared to rivals from Japanese manufacturers.

Other than some minor shuffling of equipment, the Dodge Grand Caravan carries forward unchanged for 2016.

Extremely Satisfied--So Far

We had to have rear AC and we found an APV with that feature. Price was great. Van only has 25,000 miles. It is too early to say I am perfectly satisfied with its reliability, but so far so good.

Tis still early in the game:)

Make sure U check what options are available as no one explained that the AVP comes with lots less-like no trip odometer U can reset?? It also is a bit hard to get in2 as you have to watch to make sure you don't hit your head or slip off the little frame. For the price, they really could have included a lot more esp since our 2008 jeep patriot had more for less but of course, this vehicle is huge! And for such a big van, I would think they would all come with back up assist? I must admit tho, with the flex fuel on, it runs very nice and the cruise control is wonderful and makes driving it much easier. If we get 8 years without problems, I'll be happier. (I am a bit puzzled with the choices above tho as how can ok also be N/A??)

Vacation rental

Rented from Enterprice Burleson. Was very surprised no GPS. Fortunately I had a spare. No back up camera which for the length this vehicle could really use. Great on gas for size vehicle. Not easy exit from last row seat. Road smooth. Good luggage space for our 6 persons.

A Grand Caravan

Had a 2013 Journey. Some issues with 6 speed trans upshift but completely corrected in our 2016 Grand Caravan. Excellent acceleration, smooth shifting, and excellent gas mileage, 30 highway and 24 overall. Great ride and great visibility. Plenty of room for seating and plenty of storage. Great value. Nothing close to it for the price.

Constant shifting and lack of power on highway

Drove a 2016 SXT rental with 6400 miles for a 600 mile trip. With only one passenger, the vehicle struggled to maintain highway speeds uphill and constantly downshifted to maintain a constant speed on even modest grades. I can't imagine what this symphony of shifting would be like with a load of passengers and cargo. External rear and lateral visibility was also unsatisfactory and the rear view camera was small and dim. The touch screen was small and a long reach for the driver and the info center above the steering column while easy to navigate was a hard to read backlit LCD configuration that oddly didn't show miles to empty while displaying the speedometer. Just seemed like a pretty half-heartedly designed vehicle. On the good side, the middle storage console was spacious and easy to access.

Great Deal on new DGC R/T in rare options package.

Found a 2016 Black R/T with no dvd flip down screens but with a roof rack and the tow & hitch, basically what was looking for. Better value compared to the Sienna and Odyssey. Looked at the Sienna XLE and SE as that was the comparable trim I wanted. But got my new R/T for about $8K (after mfg. Rebates and dealer discounts) off the window sticker $35K+ MSRP . The Sienna SE and XLE's MSRP was way over $37K+ and the final price after rebates and discounts would have been around $32K - $33K at best. The only major thing lacking in the R/T compared to the XLE/SE was a moon roof. But for a $5K - $6K savings can live with it. My brother in-law has the 2015 Odyssey, but never really cared for its radical exterior and looks or the interior dash layout. For various other reasons never considered the Nissan or KIA models. The DGC is dated but its body lines and design looks more conventional and clean. Its form and function meets my needs, especially the Stow N Go 2nd and 3rd row seats for cargo conversion and utility that other minivans other than Chrysler's Pacifica lacks. A Pacifica with the trim & options I wanted would have cost around mid $30's plus it's a bit smaller compared to the DGC. The Sienna's 2nd row tiny middle seat would have been useless to me and why pay for something that will never be used. It's also my personal rolling jukebox on wheels as so far downloaded over 4,000 songs on the 430N radio with Garmin navigation and premium audio with 9 speakers and 500 watts subwoofer and can still download 4,000 more songs. It's a minivan not a sports car so my expectations for how it drives and handle are realistic. My 2007 Mazda 6 with the V6 provides that experience. The R/T trim in Black with its black accents for the wheels and headlights makes it stand out from the others, looks like a minivan that Darth Vader or Batman would drive.

25 mpg Highway??????

I just drove by myself from GA to AZ. 1918 miles in economy mode and got at worst 28.5 mpg at best 32.2 mpg for an average 29.5 mpg. I'm blown' away!!! The driver seat is too high for my 6'2" body, and the arm rest is 4" too low to be of any use. It's a Dodge so I have no expectations of it being reliable.I like the fact that I can build a bed in the back and still have the all the seats when I get to my destination. I have a bad back and had no problems even without lumbar support.

Worst Gas Mileage I Ever Had

For the most part I like this car. It's moderately comfortable, reliable, the overall "package" is good, but the gas mileage is absolutely horrible. The sticker said it would get an average of 20 mpg, based on 18 mpg on city streets and 24 mpg on highways. It isn't too bad on highways, getting an average of about 20 to 22 mpg when driving long distance and maintaining a steady speed of about 50 mph. But in stop and go city driving, it's awful. Maybe about 8 or 9 mpg at best. Since I don't travel much, do mostly city driving, and the fact the I am retired and don't have tons of money, I can't say I am happy at this point. Dodge says they will fix it, so all I can do is wait and see if they do. We'll see how much "Chrysler Cares" actually cares...

Dumb blond Lady gets shafted

I bought new Van from Wilson Motors in Corvallis, Oregon. What a mistake, they took my dependable Toyota Sienna in trade and gave me
a $1000 for a car valued at $4-5000. The new Dodge Caravan didn't have enough heat to keep ice off the windshield, I took it in and was told that it met the standards! I'm in Oregon not Alaska. I went in three times to say the cruise control wasn't working and they said they couldn't repair it unless it broke right in front of them! Very rude and probably overworked repair people. The stress factor at the service desk was palpable. I spoke with the manager (a very nice man) who told them to take it in overnight, and guess what the cruise control didn't work and they had to replace it. I was so used to the ordinary features of my Toyota Sienna that I bought used and never had a break down or problem that I didn't realize that you had to remember to turn the lights on and off in this lemon. Also that the gas tank didn't lock from the inside and that when you used a regular store bought gas cap with a lock that it ruins something that costs $185 to
get the light off your dash. Also that the back seats are like cardboard. It's the biggest financial mistake I've ever made, I wonder how the salesmen feel conning those of us who are not professional car buyers.

Not sure yet..

So I need to ask the public a question, I recently purchased a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan SE plus with a 3.6 liter pentastar V-6 coupled with a 6-speed transmission. I know that the six-speed transmission has been existing for quite some time and I have seen some of the reviews with some issues pertaining to it. Recently I had it serviced for a concern that I had when placing it in reverse... after placing it in reverse easing off the brake it starts to to have a rhythmic Shake. Gets worse when it is on an uphill as if you were backing up into a driveway it is most noticeable. Now the symptoms to go away as you give it more gas it only happens as the car begins to move in reverse. I have noticed it ever so slightly when I put it into drive as I'm easing off the break as well. While I was at the dealer showing the technician the symptoms he seemed just as puzzled as I was. It was disclosed to me by a service manager at this complaint has come in in the past. They went as far as bringing a brand new 2016 Caravan still with much plastic on it and the symptoms were very much present in that same vehicle. This looks to me like a design flaw or programming issue with the 6-speed transmission. Has anyone else had this happen to them? I am currently talking to the corporate office of Dodge to try to get some sort of understanding of this situation.

Yes I Drive a Minivan- and Love It

I am not a very tall person (5'5), so not sure about how this can fits taller people, but for me it's wonderful. Kids have tons of room and even lots of storage room in the back.
Car accelerates responsively, and interior is comfortable. We have taken this van on many trips already and no complaints from the kids. We bought the higher level, with lots of gadgets and entertainment features, well worth it! Price was good too when compared to others we test- drove (Sienna, etc)

A lot of shopping

I did a lot of shopping for this van and am well pleased. I got a great deal on the price [better than the websites suggested would be an excellent deal] and the dealership was one of the best I have ever dealt with. I realize you get what you pay for, and so many of the "convenience" items are missing from my van [power seats, power side doors and liftgate, dvd, etc.] but I decided I did not need them and they would only be something more to eventually break if I kept the van for a lengthy time. I am totally impressed with the bluetooth and satellite radio function, and the seats are tremendously comfortable. My biggest reason for purchasing Dodge was the price break and the stow and go seating. I have the room of a regular size pickup truck bed behind the front seats with all the seats folded into the floor and the seats are easily used or stowed in minutes. I can now take the bicycles on long trips with them being safely stored inside the van. The 283hp is plenty and it will accelerate to highway speedo very easily. Obviously a minivan will always look like a minivan, but the Dodge does have a certain rugged look about it with the black grill and crossbars.

Had so called "better" Sienna and Odyssey...

The most car for your $!!!, I had both Sienna and Odyssey, and the front seats are for very small people, another question: who needs a build in vacuum cleaner when most garages have a shop-vac just in front of the car. If one have to own something else then Chrysler product I still recommend Toyota Sienna without the leather interior. But if looking for fastest (0-60 in 7.2 seconds) and still the best in the minivan class Dodge AVP/SE Plus with option 29Q is the best value for your $ !!! I wonder if the Gentlemen writing bad story about Dodge front seats ever sit in one...??? Now after over a year with the Pentastar Engine, still very good driving, perfect for camping. Gas mileage varies from 16mpg in hard City driving (taking on some snobbish brands and showing them my tail...) to amazing 28mpg on fuels without ethanol, well after reading some other stories I need to mention that my "mini-van" is now nicely equipped with a mans toilet (just drink all the milk from one gallon jug),and the vacuum cleaner still works perfect for all my cars.

Over 6' tall? Drivers seat is like a squat toilet

This is my first Dodge mini-van (I've had a 2nd generation Odyssey). While I've only had the vehicle two days, the drivers seat (power adjustable) is intolerable. I'm 6'2" tall. To maximum the leg room, the seat has to be all the way back and as low as it will go (raising the seat brings it forward - so tall people get a low seat and short people get a tall seat). So it's literally like using on a squatting toilet - as your rear is low and there is then no thigh support. My knees are far above my elbows.

Yes, I should have taken a test drive in the vehicle before accepting it (it is a company car), but I've never seen such a poor driver's seat in any vehicle I've driven in almost 30 years. I've always been able to adjust vehicle seats to a tolerable position before, not so far (I've driven the vehicle 7 hours already), thus I didn't think it would be problem when I approved of receiving the vehicle.

Otherwise I've found no other major issues with the vehicle. No issues noted with fit/finish or noises. Acceleration is good. The cruse control can be up to 4 mph under your desired speed on hilly terrain - I don't remember that from other Dodge/Chrylser vehicles I've owned. The Uconnect system is nice (takes more steps to do the same functions, but has similar capabilities to GM's system), however it seems slow to answer bluetooth phone calls. Yes, the 2nd and 3rd row seats are thinly padded and low, but I rarely have passengers.

About a year ago I test drive a Sienna. It's driving position wasn't great, but entirely usable. Based upon that fact alone, I'd suggest something other than a Dodge Grand Caravan.

Recurring problem with brand new van

I bought this brand new van to feel safe while transporting our family of 6 around. At 3,000 miles all of a sudden the windshiled wipers came on and would not turn off, all of the warning lights came on, a "No Bus" code appeared and I lost power to all the sliding doors. I have had it in for service twice (both times they kept it for a week). They are taking electrical components all apart (harness wires, etc) which makes me nervous because things never go back together the same way. The problem is still happening at random times and it always seems to be after business hours. The most recent time was while driving in a busy downtown area and I had no operating turn signals and did not feel safe driving this vehicle. The dealership and the headquarters want me to basically drive the vehicle (with no prediction of how long this will take) until the problem happens so that they can get an "active code" reading to help fix the problem. So here I am with a brand new unreliable vehicle that I spent thousands and thousands of dollars on that is now requiring multiple service appointments. The whole reason I went for a new vehicle was to have a reliable vehicle that I did not have to take in for service all the time.

Bias Review

Generally, I trust Edmunds for good reviews. I do, however, feel that Edmunds bias towards the Dodge Grand Caravan. We looked at the Odyssey, Sienna, and Kia Sedona. The odyssey at the price we purchased the fully loaded model R/T DGC blows the odyssey out of the water. The Sienna is a goofy, heavy, unattractive minivan with expensive models. The Sedona's second-row captains chairs can't be removed, so it is sort of comical that they bash and go after the DGC for its outdated or design, when it has amazing cargo space, and very handy stown'go features. I have a hard time trusting Edmunds anymore.

Great Value & Practical Buy

We have owned two Caravans before this one so we are familiar with the line. I had one of the originals as a company car in 1986. We bought a base model Caravan in 1999 when starting our family. It was then a great value in a new vehicle and we drove it up until 3-years ago when the cost of fixing it was greater than the value of the vehicle. That was the 4-cylinder model with a 3-spd tranny and we put about 175,000 miles on it before it's useful life ended (14-years). During that time we replaced one transmission, a couple timing belts and otherwise just normal upkeep. We bought a used one 3-years ago that was a 2005 with 90,000 miles on it because we needed a vehicle in a hurry. I only changed oil, tires and brakes on that one but the engine light started coming on (rich fuel mixture) and the transmission started doing it's goofiness at about 120,000 miles. So... with the big rebates on the 2016 I took it in and exchanged it for the base model 2016. I had bought it for $5500 and got $1200 on the trade so $1433/year to drive wasn't bad.

Base models sure have changed in 17-years. I feel like the base model vehicle has everything I wanted and at $16,971 after rebates, I feel it has very good value over the estimated 15-year lifespan of the vehicle. The fuel economy is actually worse than our 4-cylinder but not enough to sour me on the engine. The storage and the stow-n-go seats really make for maximum usable space and capacity. Obviously our reliability experience is minimal since we have only owned it a month. I do know that the quality differences between manufacturers have greatly narrowed. Where the Japanese machines used to have commanding quality advantages the differences are much less now. I also like to buy models that are mature and this vehicle certainly qualifies in that this is the 8th year without meaningful platform changes on the model. If you look at the reported defects/service visits on one of the online resources it shows that Dodge has improved dramatically from the earlier model years (2008, 2009) in terms of initial quality. The maintenance requirements are also drastically lower compared to older vehicles. You change the oil, tires and brakes and there is no more timing belt. The transmission is sealed and pushes out the first service to 120,000 miles, plugs @ 100,000. I think I'll preempt those numbers slightly but overall that decreases the cost of driving.

Everyone who rides in it comments on how nice it is but that is the case with most new vehicles. It is a minivan, not a Porsche so I set my expectations accordingly. It drives well for extended trips, low road noise and I think the front seats are the best I've ever seen in a vehicle. They are exceptionally comfortable. The transmission is a 6-spd which is a dramatic difference from the older vehicles. I don't know how it rates vs. the Japanese or S. Korean rivals because I didn't drive them but it strikes me as a perfectly acceptable driving experience for a minivan. I own Hyundai and a Chevy as other vehicles so I don't have a brand loyalty other than I buy mainly for value. The Dodge was $9,000 less than the nearest competitor that I could buy. Whatever flaws it may or may not have are easily overcome by that price delta. Resale value.... it doesn't hold up as good as the Honda or Toyota. But I'd focus on the cost to drive, not absolute resale value. Look at the delta in price rather and consider sales tax, insurance and financing cost in the equation. If you plan to turn a vehicle over every 3-years then I'd do the math using data from current model vehicles that are on the market and compare buying one vs. the other. If you buy and hold a vehicle I don't see how resale value matters.

Crash: NoFire: NoNumber of Injured: 0Number of Deaths: 0
Summary:

When the outside temperature is 85-90 degrees, our van has a computer glitch. it has occurred both when first starting the engine or going down the road. it has happened several times beginning july 2016. the wipers come on and cannot be turned off. there are no gages on the dash and the display reads "no bus." the turn signals and brake lights do not work. there is no radio, a/c or heater, and some of the windows won't work. we are not able to tell how fast we are going with no gages. this problem did happen one time as we were going 75 mph down the interstate. it was truly an unsafe situation with no turn signals and brake lights and no way to know our actual speed. this lasted for about 40 miles until the outside temperature dropped. we have had the vehicle to the dealer 6 times for a total of over 40 days in the last three months. they were able to duplicate the error one time for about 20 seconds but the problem resolved before the tech could get the scanner hooked up. the tipm and another module have been replaced but the problem continues to occur. chrysler customer care has closed our claim, saying that because they cannot duplicate the problem now that the weather is cooler, they cannot do any more. our concern is that the problem will arise again when the weather warms up next summer.

2016 Dodge Grand Caravan Review

From Edmunds.com
