2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Overview

Data provided by Edmunds

The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a very popular choice for a light-duty full-size pickup truck. The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 can be equipped with a V6 engine or one of two powerful V8s. Learn more about the 2016 Silverado's new infotainment systems that include Apple CarPlay.

While Chevrolet's new Bolt electric vehicle gets more attention from the press and the Camaro sports car is more eye-catching, it is Chevy's line of pickup trucks that keeps the lights on at the Detroit headquarters. Of these, the full-size 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is undoubtedly the most important. Chevy sells hundreds of thousands of them each year, and depending on how it's equipped, it can range from being a simple business workhorse to a luxury-based suburban assault vehicle ferrying the kids to school each morning. Considering that Ford fully redesigned the F-150 last year, it's no surprise to see Chevy giving the Silverado its own list of upgrades for 2016. On the outside, there's a lightly refreshed exterior with a trim-specific grille, a revised hood and LED accent lighting. On LTZ and High Country models, the 5.3-liter V8 can now be ordered with an eight-speed automatic in lieu of the standard six-speed. Upgrades to the interior are mostly focused on the technology front. Optional on the Work Truck and included on the LS trim is a 7-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. When a compatible phone is connected, the touchscreen imitates the phone's interface so users can easily access popular applications and controls without using their phone directly. The 8-inch screen on the upper trim levels also gets CarPlay functionality, while Android Auto comes later in the model year by way of a software update. These additional features complement what was already a very capable and enjoyable light-duty full-size pickup. The seats and ride are comfortable, with road and wind noise kept to a minimum. All engines produce performance numbers that are competitive with the segment, although the upgraded V8 makes the Silverado one of the quickest in its class. And the Z71 package truly transforms the truck into a seriously capable off-roader. As good as the Silverado is, though, it doesn't do much to take the pickup game to the next level. The 2016 Ford F-150's extensive use of high-strength aluminum makes it much lighter, and its turbocharged six-cylinder engines feel faster than the numbers suggest. The 2016 Ram 1500 continues to impress with its comfortable ride (thanks in part to its unique coil spring rear suspension) and a fuel-sipping diesel engine. Another option this year is the 2016 Nissan Titan XD, which straddles the line between light-duty and heavy-duty trucks because of its torquey diesel V8 engine. Alternately, you can step up to the mechanically related 2016 GMC Sierra if you like the Silverado but want a slightly richer interior ambience. But in the big picture these are all really nice trucks. It's easy to recommend the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado considering its all-around proficiencies.

A wide range of body styles, an impressive interior and a lineup of powerful and fuel-efficient engines make the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado a solid choice in the full-size pickup class.

The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado gets revised front-end styling, including several new grille designs and LED lighting. Inside, the two available touchscreens boast quicker response times and gain Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. On the safety front, the Enhanced Driver Alert package adds a lane departure intervention system. An eight-speed automatic transmission is now available with the 5.3-liter V8 on upper trim levels.

Awesome truck

Awesome truck, very pleased. Owned a 2007 LTZ and was very satisfied with it's service but this is so much more truck. The only negative so far is the Google play app and charging pad function does not seam to work. Had the software downloaded at the dealer but my phone still does not charge on the pad.

Trouble Shifting to Truck

Have owned two Chevy Vans last 18 years never an issue. Wanted a truck to pull my boat. Chose to stay with Chevy given the track record. Truck shifts hard in the low gears. Cold starting the truck jerks into gear and when down shifting it is harder than it should be. Should not feel it down shift. Took it to the dealer and their mechanic got it to down shift hard in parking lot but he said thinks it will smooth out over time. Otherwise I love the truck, comfortable, smooth ride on both highway and around town. Gas mileage is

19 Mpg in city!

This truck is not in Edmunds model description. I went from a 1998 Saturn "great car", to a Chevy Silverado 2 WD, WT extended cab with a V8. I have been spoiled with 34 mpg in the city and 42 mpg highway, for almost 19 years. With the first fill up of gas in this truck I averaged almost 19 mpg city driving. I'm very impressed with the truck so far. It is very quite, has plenty of power, and looks like it will get almost 2 times the mpg of my previous 83" Chevy pickup. But, with only 300 miles on it, I can't tell you much. I'll let you know in 19 years what I think ;) I had a hard time finding this truck. It seems like most trucks are loaded, 4 WD with 6 cylinders. For 1 mpg difference why buy a 6 cylinder. I really wanted to buy a extended cab with a 8' bed, but GM doesn't sell it in the 1500 trucks. I looked at the 2500's until I saw how bad the Mpg was!

Comfortable!!

Great ride. Little road noise. Have to have running boards unless you are tall. Changing radio stations does lag, though.

2016 chevy silverado 1500

Wanted a Ford f-150 aluminum body but could get enough rebates to make my payment where I needed it to be. I went looked at silverado 1500 I have 6 speed Auto transmission with 5.3L engine. Sticker price 47know but with employee discount and all rebates was able get it down to 34k...... 18" rims looks good and handles great...... only 1000 miles on it so far. Very quite inside while driving on Highway. Gas mileage 15-24 mpg but not a lead foot. Still trying to adjust to body style don't like the boxie look yet. Bought it because a lot of truck for the money compared to ford trucks...... think the steel body much stronger but weights more and will rust years later...... all in all its very nice truck for the money..... leather heated seats and many other options

What happened to my Car Play!

so, I picked up my new Silverado 1500 and noticed while going through the truck that Airplay was missing. I asked the salesmen why didn't my truck on this since it was on of my requested features (also standard on my trim level). I was told that someone had ordered the truck without it and I would be able to bring it in the next day for an update. The next day I called to get an update. I was told that "due to supply issues my truck did not come with CarPlay that that GM "may" make it right some day. For now, I received a $200 credit.. $200? I wanted carplay.. I don't really care about the stupid credit.. GM.. Make it right please!

Good gas milage

only have 6500 miles so far, but I have averaged 22.2 MPG. I do mostly highway, and use the cruise control at the speed limit.
The V8 transition to V4 is seemless, I am happy with this truck!

2016 Silverado LS regular cab short bed 5.3 v8

The 5.3 v8 can definitely roast some tires at 355 hp. Runs great and drives great. Sometimes the 6 speed tranny acts funny with all these crazy electronics and it swapping from v4 to v8 mode but most of the time you don't even notice. It has great traction but in the rain it's like every other truck... I can be driving down the interstate doing 70 and if I stomp it in the rain tires still spin. Some of this is due to the power of the v8 but it's very light in the rearend. The tow package and the locking rearend are great. Interior and stereo, accessories, etc are all awesome. The hid headlights are very bright and the led running light strips have a nice clean look to them paired up with the great looking new grill and hood. Gas mileage is definitely not the greatest at all but it is a truck. All in all I really love my truck. Hasn't given me any problems and I don't expect it to. It's a very dependable truck the morning after I got it I hadn't even had it 24 hours I took it on a 500 mile drive one way. 5/5 review.

Extremely pleased with Silverado LTZ

We traded in a 2016 Toyota Tacoma off road double cab for a 2016 Silverado LTZ. The LTZ has the 6.2L and 8 spd tranny. The Silverado get's better fuel mileage, more comfortable and is hands down a better truck than the Toyota. My family loves the cabin space, the layout, comfort and I like the smooth 6.2l and 8spd tranny combo. I've had the truck 3 weeks and have 2,500 miles on it and I'm impressed with the MPG's! Sub-zero temperatures and I'm getting 19mpg on the highway- better than my Tacoma ever did!

Drove this through Montana. It's sweet...

I rented this car for my family vacation in and around Yellowstone Park this summer. It was super comfortable to drive. My iphone connected with no issues and the kids really like the view riding from the back. These new trucks drive more like luxury SUVs with all the bells and whistles.

Great truck good deal

Haven't had the truck long enough to accurately rate, only 4200 miles, but pleased overall. Sticker was 47500 and purchased for 34900. Had to drive to Salt Lake City to get this deal. Best I could do locally was 41000. I have the short bed, 5' 8". This was not in the choices I had to select when I was putting this review together. I have the 5.3 V-8 and the All*STAR package. Mileage in town varies between 15.1 to 19.2 with an overall MPG of 23.3. I like the feature that reduces your engine use from 8 to 4 cylinders when you not need the power. I am curious as to how they can do that. Have not utilized all the features yet such as towing, 4WD, other transmission speeds, and a few more. For a Z71 with the LT trim package. I was surprised with all the features, duel climate control, etc. Need to get running boards but that's okay, I would rather the truck set high anyway. I have painted bumpers which I wasn't to sure about but they have grown on me and the overall appearance looks sharp. My only issue (especially with painted bumpers) is that it is very hard to judge how close you are to any barriers when parking head in, signs on poles, etc.

Love this truck

My wife and I went to the dealership to look for a truck for me, found it!; and she found a sweet little sedan which went home with us too. We were in and out in record time, and they had our new vehicles ready for us the next day. Great experience; we recommend them.

Just bought the truck

The front passenger seat is unconfortable as the back is flat and it puts your legs to sleep the way it was made. I have my husband stop after 100 miles or so, so I can get my back and legs in order. Can't afford a power seat so I can adjust it, so I guest I have to live with it. At the age of late 60s you people should remember not all people are young when they buy your trucks. Please change the seat for the next person as they could be Handycap like me. Love my truck! Would not buy anything else!

Hi on High Country

This review is based on the High Country model which Edmunds doesn't list. I really like the grill and front end design. Interior with saddle leather looks awesome and cab is quiter than wife's Audi. Ride is very comfortable and handling is very good for a truck. My only complaint is auto manufacturer's seem to over price trucks.

Replaced my 2007 Chevy Silverado

As a 2nd time truck buyer, the 2016 chevy silverado is hands down superior to the 2007 silverado that I previously owned. Its much quieter, handles like a dream, has better gas mileage - although 15.7 is about as good as I have gotten so far but thats still 2 mpg better than my 2007. I have only had it for 785 miles so its new. Its beautiful and well appointed. The only drawback is climbing into the truck. I do not have running boards yet but will need to get them to provide a step up. My wife has a problem getting into the truck. In terms of acceleration, it does fine. The interior is very nice with the leather seats which have a cooling feature which is great in the summer. I have only had it for a couple of weeks so its all really new. I read other reviews that talk about a vibration but I have not had that happen. I am a proud owner of this truck

"Disappointed"

2016 truck has 2400 miles on it. Is the roughest ride I have ever had in a chevy pickup. Cant travel it because wife feels the truck is going to break down due to the vibration. Had it in the shop 7 times for shimmy(vibration) at medium and highway speeds. Shop changed tires , balanced several times. Nothing they did helped. Dealer told me it was the best they could do. I had several friends drive it and they came to the same conclusion. We all agreed to never purchase a Silverado and pass that statement on to others.

My First New Truck In 25 Years

I will be 70 years old in October of this year. I have been grousing around about the cost of a new vehicle for the past 9 years. My 32 yr. old daughter told me to get my head out of the 1960's and quit complaining about the cost of everything. I went to a online inflation calculator and I was very surprised to see that things really aren't any more expensive now v. back in the 1960's. I made the decision it was time for met to buy a new truck. That said I checked around on prices from various dealerships and ended up buying my new truck at Dave Smith Motors in Kellogg, Idaho. Their claim to fame is they are the largest GM dealer west of the Mississippi. They have around 3,000 vehicles in stock at any given time. I gave them a list of things I wanted in a new truck and they called my back in about an hour. They had my truck in stock and gave me a run down on what the final price would be. I saved a lot of money by calling Dave Smith Motors in Kellogg, Idaho. I have now driven this truck 500 miles and wonder why it took me so long to buy a new truck. It gets great gas mileage, no squeaks, rattles or other noises. It is very quiet at freeway speed. The ride is smooth and when going over rough roads it absorbs whatever is out there. I love the MPG data, I got as high as 29 MPG on the trip home (400 miles) and the average for the trip was 21.4 MPG. It is a full sized mechanical marvel. You have to drive one of these new crew cab trucks to fully appreciate all the engineering that went into these new trucks. GM has produced a real winner. I have owned three other Chevrolet trucks over the years and a couple of new suburbans and this truck is a real stand out in comfort and luxury.

Broke down 3 time in the first year!

I have always owned Ford trucks but because my son worked for GM I wanted to support him and the company. I bought the Silverado . On a trip to Florida it broke down- they said it was the o2 sensor. Same trip- it breaks down again- they put me up in a hotel because they say it's the coil and they have to order a part... 2 days later my truck gets fixed. I head back on the road again . I make it through 3 states and it breaks down again on a Saturday afternoon. Once again I am stuck in a strange town with a new truck that has broke down!

VIBRATION ISSUES!!! #chevyshake - Buyer beware!!!

I bought a $60,000 Chevy Silverado High Country with 31 miles on it. I drover it around town and maybe up to 40 on the back roads. The truck was amazing and the look was great. Then I bought and drove it home on the highway and it shook and vibrated. They have rebalanced tires and made it worse. They are trying to put a better tire on it to lesson the vibration but there is NO fix. No disclosure when buying it. It shakes so bad it makes me sick, it could also be the fact I paid $60k for a truck that shakes more than my 2003 rust bucket Dodge did. Research it and educate yourself...BUYER BEWARE!!!

1500 Silverado is best in value.

I admit that Silverado is my truck of preference, given my last one lasted 16 yrs and 189,000 miles. Heavy rust issues from living in the northeast is what made it time to trade in. I test drove the Ford and though it was a nice ride, I thought the handling was OK and you can feel that turbo working. I really like the Ram and felt this came with great options and the best ride on the highway. I choose the Silverado because it had the best value without sacrificing anything. The new look of the Silverado is tough and sleek and the standard HID lights are really impressive. The handling is great and the ride is really comfortable. The crew cab is more than enough room for adults plus really handy to store away tool. I have owned it now for 4 months and can't say a bad thing about it. I do a lot of mix driving and am averaging 19-20 MPGs which is really nice. Shop around for the price but you can not go wrong. The LT model is a nice mid range with enough options but does not break the bank.

Long time F150 owner now Chevy!

I have owned 3 F150's over the years and was in the market for a new truck. I wanted a truck with big v8 power (my last F150 had the 6.2l motor). reasonable gas mileage and ability to tow a 7x14 V nose enclosed trailer long distance in comfort. I don't do off road stuff but every so often I do hit some dirt roads. I didn't want to move to a F250 or any 3/4 ton. I looked first for a truck with a 6.2l engine and the only one I found with that option was Silverado. Well, I started looking and found that not only was it basically the same motor as in the C7 but it came with a 8 speed transmission. The Silverado comes in many different flavors and the engine choice limited me to a High Country or an LTZ Z71. I found 2 trucks about 70 miles away from where I live and test drove one and bought it the same day. I got what I needed (power, comfort, rugged). I also got what I wont use (crazy technology built-in wifi, lane assist, front assist, rear assist etc)) and hopefully it will be as reliable a truck as my fords have been. I just couldn't do a twin turbo v6 in a truck so hello Chevy and so long Ford!
Update at 6000 miles. So we put this truck through some pretty intense miles. Hooked up a 7x14 enclosed motorcycle trailer with 2 baggers and towed it from VA to CO and then to WY. Went up steep mountains and through torrential rains. Experienced the joy of bad roads in various sections of the 5000 mile vacation over 2 weeks. Love this truck. Gas mileage went to hell ofcourse towing 5000 pounds+ but stable, able to go up steep inclines, handle wet roads, couple of emergency manouvers without problem, no overheating running straight for 16 hours in sometimes 102 degree heat.
Update at 10,000 miles. No issues still. Using the truck still primarily for long distance trips and hauling stuff around town. Gas mileage varies between 17-21.7 depending on my heavy foot. With the big motor, its fun to to hammer it every now and then. They say this particular setup can do 0-60 in 5.9 sec, I can believe it. Crazy for a 6000 lb rig, not complaining LOL!

Don't buy a z71 4x4 silverado

Words cannot express my displeasure with my 2016 silverado z71. I purchased it brand new with only 10 miles on it. My first time on the highway was awful. This vehicle vibrates and shakes extremely bad. I took it back to the dealership and they told me it needed aligning, it was tire pressure from sitting on the lot, and even the suspension. I disagreed because it doesn't happen all the time. It rides good every now and then but for the most part it is horrible. I called the corporate office who stated that they have received numerous complaints about this and it was up to the dealership to get me out of it. The dealership has not worked with me and told me I was stuck with unless I accept the horrible offer they gave me to trade it in. I have never been more displeased with a vehicle as I am with this one. After the lies about the issues, I was told that is was operating as expected but yet their fliers read that they believe in making their customers happy. I am extremely upset with the performance of this brand new vehicle. DO NOT BUY ONE of these. I promise you will be as displeased as I am.

Major mistake, never again. good buy chevy.

For 43K, and purchased brand spanking new, at 3k miles i should not have vibration issues, hard downshifting, and terrible dealer denial. I am so fed up with the lack of quality, and attention to detail. All the bells and whistles don't mean a thing if the vehicle shifts poorly, lunges when placed in gear, and makes terrible noises when it downshifts. The dealer was helpless (i kinda feel for the dealer, they are not the manufacturer. This is an engineering and quality issue).
I DO NOT recommend you waste your money on the 2016 chevy silverado crew, 5.3l. Chevy CANNOT get the basic functionality of what a vehicle is supposed to be correct. Don't buy into the look, or the commercials, these vehicles are nothing but polished poop. purchasing this chevy truck was a major mistake and i hope you learn from my mistake, but at my cost. God bless.

Do not waist your money!!!

Vibration problems started within two weeks of owning the truck. The dealer knows there are vibration problems but there is not a fix. I was told that's the way they are, deal with it. The transmission is sluggish and slow to keep up with the driving situations. The electronics crash frequently. The dealership said it was due to subpar and cheap Chinese made memory chips and control boards. Please do not waist your money on this truck. I traded the truck for a Dodge Ram after only 2200 mile. Worst of all the dealership fully understands the problems but will not mention them during the sales process. They will gladly take your money and give you a piece of junk in return.

Rented 4 pickups bought the Silverado

I was in the market for a new pickup and definitely preferred the Toyota Tundra before driving any of them because I have owned Toyota and Lexus vehicles for the last 20 years. Can't beat the reliability anywhere. Drove the Tundra and liked it but could not average more than 15 mpg, didn't matter that I took a trip to Naples, still 15 mpg. The truck was very nice but that was a problem for me. I rented an F150, not crazy about the looks and the aluminum body, just my opinion, and the Ram, could not get past the rotating knob for a shifter, reminded me of the old push button transmission fad of the old Chrysler and the gas mileage was terrible like the Tundra. Rented a Silverado thinking I have not bought a Chevy in 30 years and to my surprise, I posted 22.9 mpg on the highway, a high of 24.2 and an average of 21.9. I was shocked and amazed at how great it rode and handled. The Apple car play was a bonus and a great addition to the my sync system which sounds surprisingly good. Purchased the crew cab short bed with the all star package and the V8 and so far averaging 22.5 mpg in mixed mostly highway driving. Also, I do not have the Silverado shake I have read about and hope this truck serves me as well as all the Toyota vehicles I bought in the past. Only time will tell but so far, very pleased with the purchase but it has only been the first week

2800 mileage since new because i have problems fueling the tank. i cannot get fuel to pump into the tank correctly. it's been a problem since i purchased the truck. i've taken it to many different gas stations thinking it was a gas pump issue. the pump handle clicks off when trying to fill the tank. it makes no difference how fast you try to fill the tank or how deep the nozzle is inserted into the tube. i had a chevrolet service person at the local dealership try to fill the tank to verify my issue. he noticed there is a problem. they checked for a "tsb" and there is one detailing a replacement of the fuel tank. service advisor stated they would call after getting in the part in 3 days. they never called back. i called back after a week because they never returned my complaint issue. she stated that they cannot get the parts to fix the problem from gm. i do not understand how this is not a recall. i must fill my tank with a gas can to get it to take any gas. a major inconvenience and fuel spillage. i like the truck. i just can't fuel it with a gas pump.

I purchased my truck in august 2016. i noticed a vibration from 70-80 mph. very noticeable in the steering wheel and more recently in the driver seat. it's been to the dealer twice. they picoscoped (service tool) to isolate the vibration. performed lots of balancing, new tires, drive shaft, differential (ring & pinion). vibration more noticeable than ever. but they claim it's within spec. they have a field service engineer meeting my car at the dealer on wednesday 11/09/2016, but the dealer is already setting me up for disappointment. this prompted me to search on line today where i found "chevy shakes". the stories match my experience completely. i love everything about my truck until i hit 75, then i become so infuriated that my $50k truck with 2,700 miles apparently isn't going to be fixable from what i've read. i wouldn't know what to tell a potential buyer if for some reason i had to sell it. it clearly has a problem. if i'm told it can't be fixed, i will demand my money back. i'm at 75 every day, and the vibration isn't only annoying, but it numbs your hands from the shaking.

I am having an issue with my new 2016 silverado and a vibration at highway speeds. i took the truck back to the dealer where it was purchased with around 340 miles on it. i was told they could do nothing until i had 1000 miles on the truck (they stated they could not get paid by chevy for warranty items). that ticket stated they rebalanced my tires. this had no change. i took the truck back after 1000 miles. the dealer did a road force balance. this helped very little. now, at 1345 miles, it is back in the shop. they state they will do a picoscope on the truck and check the axle. i should mention the underlying issue is a vibration that can be felt at speeds in excess of 65-70mph. it is more prevalent from 70-75mph. i have filed a complaint with gm, reference case 82405350103. this appears to be the same issue for the 2014-2015 models referred to as the "chevy shake". one more attempt and i will likely start lemon law procedures in ga. i would like someone to seriously investigate gm on this complaint. there are plenty of forums with people complaining about the same issue. this could be an extremely dangerous issue if it is tire or wheel related, or even drive shaft related. *tr

Crash: NoFire: NoNumber of Injured: 0Number of Deaths: 0
Summary:

A condition exists where, after the driver has used the gas pedal to accelerate, then has removed their foot from the pedal, then presses the cruise "set" button a brief moment later, and then immediately attempts to decelerate by repeatedly pressing minus "-" on the cruise control, that the speed control becomes confused and displays multiple different speeds, while maintaining the original speed, even though the driver believes they are decelerating. this can be reproduced on any 2016 silverado model by following these steps: throttle up and accelerate (to pass, for example), remove foot from accelerator, then immediately press the "set" button, followed by 5-10 presses on the decelerate "-" button; the speed will set at 65, for example, then flip between 64, 65, 63, 65, 62, 65, 61, 65, 60, 65, and so on, maintaining speed at 65 even though the driver is instructing the vehicle to decelerate. it may take 5-10 seconds for the speed control to clear allowing the driver to make changes, however they will still be cruising at 65. during this period, the driver does not realize that they are not decelerating at which point they may tap the brakes to disengage cruise, but have lost 5-10 seconds of time. this has presented a dangerous condition where the driver believes they're decelerating when too quickly approaching another vehicle, risking collision.

The steel cables that hold the tail gate in the down position are different lengths. the left or driver side cable is the only cable that has tension on it in the down position. the full weight of the tail gate is only on one cable that could cause failure of the cable due to the weight and could cause the tail gate to torque and be damaged. the slack on the right or passenger side cable has about a 6 inch play in it. i contacted the dealer and gm. the dealership and gm stated that was the way the cables were engineered. i owned a 2002 gmc sierra previously and both cables on the tail gate were the same length, which distributed weight evenly. i looked at other 2016 silverado models and most had excessive slack on the right tail gate cable as mine, but some didn't. this problem could cause injury if weight is on the cable and could damage the tail gate itself.

2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Review

From Edmunds.com
