2016 Chevrolet Cruze Overview

Data provided by Edmunds

The completely redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Cruze is one compact sedan that's worth a close look. A standard turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine promises very good fuel economy and peppy performance. Offering advanced safety and technology features, the redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Cruze is an intriguing option compared to its small sedan rivals.

Just like the midsize Malibu sedan last year and the full-size Impala in 2014, the compact 2016 Chevrolet Cruze has been transformed. Outside, the styling is sharp and adventurous, in stark contrast to the previous Cruze's handsome but still largely anonymous sheet metal. Inside, the inspired dashboard design includes upgraded materials and fresh technology features. This redesigned Cruze could very well be a prime pick for small sedan shoppers this year. The 2016 Cruze has a fresh look, highlighted by sleeker curves and more pronounced fender arches. For motivation, the 2016 Cruze comes with a standard turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which Chevy has revised from the previous model year to make 15 more horsepower and 29 more pound-feet of torque. This engine has less work to do, too, as Chevrolet says the 2016 Cruze has shed about 250 pounds. Pleasingly, the redesigned Cruze is also a bit roomier, particularly for rear seat passengers. Four adults can now fit with comfort to spare. In keeping with other 2016 GM models, the new Cruze's standard MyLink touchscreen infotainment system (it used to be optional) provides quicker response times compared to last year's version, as well as both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Other newly available interior features include a Bose audio system, wireless phone charging, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel. Moreover, safety-conscious shoppers can outfit the Premier trim with advanced technologies like lane-departure intervention and forward collision alert. Small-car drivers increasingly expect big feature content these days, and the 2016 Cruze is certainly poised to deliver. If you're shopping for a 2016 small sedan, we'd also suggest taking a look at the redesigned 2016 Honda Civic, which broadly matches the Chevy's equipment while delivering better performance with its optional turbo engine. The 2016 Kia Forte is perhaps best known for being a good value, but it also drives well and gives you plenty of standard and available niceties. The 2016 Mazda 3 has the sportiest handling of the bunch and also impresses with its fuel economy, while the 2016 Ford Focus is an oldie but goodie that's rewarding to drive and benefits from many recent refinements. But if you're looking for a well-rounded small sedan with few, if any weaknesses, the totally transformed 2016 Chevrolet Cruze is a must-drive.

Small sedans are getting better every year, and for proof you only need to check out the redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Cruze. You'll like the way the Cruze sips gas and how its handsome cabin has a surprising amount of room for you and your passengers. There's plenty of the latest safety and in-car technology, too. Ready to find out if this new Cruze is right for you?

The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze has been completely redesigned. The previous-generation Cruze, now called the Cruze Limited, is also still on sale.

UNRELIABLE

I bought a new Cruze 2016. The engine is making a squealing noise from the begining. In 1 month of ownership I have been 4 times to the dealership to fix it and it is still not fixed. Beside that I had my headlights and tail lights replaced for fogging, wheelsa aligned and water getting in the trunk fixed twice. Spent 11 days in the shop already and I an due back again.

Cruzin' along

So far I have put 2400 miles on my Red Hot 2016 Cruze LT. On a recent interstate road trip of 1000 miles in June, I set the cruise at 74 and got 44.1 mpg based on fill-ups. (The computer was very close, reading 44.3.) It's a great car for long trips. The ride is smooth and quiet. The power driver's seat made it easy to find a comfortable driving position. My model doesn't have power lumbar, but I didn't need it because the seat's standard lumbar design is perfect for me. Around my small town, I get 38-43 mpg depending on my route. The back seat has a LOT more leg room than our previous Cruze, which my teenagers really like. The built-in WiFi works very well. Bluetooth works nicely as well. Good sound system. Controls are very easy to use. The AC is very efficient. On medium-low, the car stayed comfortable with temps in the 90s. Visibility is good in all directions. I like the black interior - looks classy. On the down side, there could be a little less chrome in the interior - sunlight reflections are pretty annoying at times. Also, the visors don't slide, which creates some other sun issues. There's no second DC outlet in the back seat, which my previous Cruze had, and my teenagers greatly miss it! The front passenger seat does not adjust for height and sits a little low, in my opinion. Overall, I am pleased with this new Cruze. I have the RS appearance package, which has already received lots of compliments, even from strangers.

The start stop thing is not that bad as some say. the fuel economy is great, plenty of power with the turbo. very comfortable seats and i am a big guy. great safety features for a small car, and a strong aggressive look to it.

Soooo Close

I drove this car for a week while mine was in the shop. Initially I thought "What a fantastic car". I had not been in a Chevy for years and was genuinely surprised by the quality, comfort, and ride. The good. It rides great with fantastic gas mileage. Lots of backseat room. Seats are comfortable. Center display is great. Like the Bluetooth connectivity. Sound system good. Material quality is good and while not a stunning interior it is fashionable. Good trunk space. The bad. These are things that would absolutely keep me from buying this car. The engine stop/start feature and no ability to turn it off. It is frustrating, annoying and ridiculous. It is the single most detractor of this car. The second is that the brake pedal is three inches higher than the accelerator. The last is that there is no map displayed with directions. They have "Navigation" if you call On Star turn by voice navigation but I would never buy a car without mapped navigation.

Stable, quiet cruiser

I can't disagree more with one of the other reviewers. I own a LT automatic with the keyless start, and have put nearly 2,000 miles on in 3 weeks. This car has great, responsive steering. I have never driven a compact that is as quiet and stable on the road. I own 2 of the old body style cruzes(2011 Eco auto, 2016 limited 1.8 manual), and have a sister with a corolla, a friend with a focus, and test drove the new civic and Mazda 3. The handling wasn't quite as crisp as the Mazda, but it felt better than the Mazda and all the others as a daily driver. I average over 43 mpg doing 76 mph on the interstate. The absolute worst tank I saw was 33 mpg with about 80% town driving and one short highway trip--I love the start-stop feature at stop lights. One problem is in stop/go creeping I find myself taking my foot off the brake and creeping forward to try to override it if the car in front will start to move right away. My guess is the reviewer getting 24 mpg is actually a 2016 limited with the 1.8 auto, and the guy that felt unstable was on a short test drive on some kind of grooved road that needs to be fixed. I encourage anyone to put this car on your test drive list.

Glad I didn't purchase!

Just leased the 2016 Chevy Cruz Premium, so glad I didn't purchase due to auto stop/start. I think this is going to be a safety issue, when the start fails. The stop start is noisy and annoying. Went to dealer to try and disconnect, service said customers are complaining all day about this feature. I've got 2 years and 11 months to go, unless recalls begin sooner.

Proud to drive around in this little gem!

I question the validity of the negative reviews that have been written. Just because you don't like the Auto Stop/Start feature doesn't mean the entire car is bad. I for one like it because it saves gas and I have no problem accelerating from a standstill; the engine instinctively starts back up and the turbo kicks in and I'm flying. Besides, once you get used to the Auto Stop/Start you won't even notice it. There really is not a better compact car out right now that can match the 2016 Cruze in terms of reliability, comfort, etc. This car is fun to drive and for me the 0-60 time with the automatic transmission is about 8 seconds, which is good for a compact sedan with a 4-cylinder engine. The interior is tastefully appointed and built well for a $20,000 car. Upon getting inside the vehicle you forget you're in a compact car thanks to a welcoming interior, smooth ride, and lots of space! Seriously, this car feels bigger on the inside and the trunk is still a very good size. The controls are simple and very easy to use. This car offers all the bells and whistles for a very affordable price!

Crappy rental car

I drove a 2016 Cruze LT as a rental for two-and-a-half days while my 2014 Civic was getting a minor bumper repair. There are no ways to express how much I hated this car. There was not much headroom, the front seat was uncomfortable, the stop/start was annoying, it lacked power and it rolled backwards when I stopped at stop signs on small hills and took my foot off the brake (automatic transmission). The interior layout and controls for the windows and other instruments was goofy, almost as if GM didn't know where to put things so they just threw it in anywhere. The driver's window did not do an "express up" like most cars and you had to hold the button. The controls for the outside mirrors were not within reach. The radio did not turn off when I turned off the ignition, I had to open the door first with the engine running. It had a foot operated parking brake and some of the radio station controls were behind the steering wheel and every time I moved my hands I accidentally changed stations. It stalled once in the drive through lane at the bank when I tried to drive away. The backup camera and audio display were nice. GM needs to go back and finish this car, I was never so glad to see my Civic and certainly appreciate Honda engineering after driving this piece of junk. It's been a couple of weeks and I still recall my bad experience.

Solid compact car

This Cruze LT has been great so far. On a 1000-mile road trip, I got 44.3 mpg based on fill-ups, very close to the computer at 44.5. It was 90% interstate at an average of 74 mph with temps in the 80s and 90s. On a 100-mile stretch of rural highway, I got 48.7 mpg going 60-65 mph, including driving through some small towns. The ride is very smooth and quiet. GM builds nice riding cars. The driver's seat fits me perfectly. I had no need for lumbar support. Great seat design. It's the best driver's seat I've experienced for a long drive. The AC is very efficient - with it set on only the third notch, it kept the car cool when it was 95 outside. Around my small town, I have been getting 42-43 mpg, matching the computer. I really like the auto stop - just like in our Prius - and it really helps save gas. The steering is secure, and the car corners nicely with very little lean. I prefer the Cruze handling to the Mazda 3 I test drove. The sound system is very good. I got the RS appearance package with Red Hot paint, and the car looks sharp. I've already received many compliments on the car's looks. The increased back seat space is a welcome change over my 2014 Cruze, which was pretty cramped in the back. The power seat is great and easily adjusts for a comfortable position. A few minor drawbacks: The visors don't slide, which can be annoying depending on the sun's location. Also, the chrome trim is nice, but it creates annoying sun reflections at certain times of the day, especially the chrome around the shifter. The passenger seat has no height adjustment, and sits a little low, in my opinion. There's only one 12V outlet (cigarette lighter), and my previous Cruze Eco had a second outlet in the back, which was convenient for my teenagers on long trips. These are minor issues, though. Overall, I really like this new Cruze.

Will not purchase due stop/start

Listen to your customers. Your customers will choose other brands if GM forces them to live with stop/start feature. Give them an option to turn it off. Customers hate it. Just hate it. Also, the front of the driver's seat needs to be able to tilt down few degrees more. So uncomfortable.

Auto Stop not impressed

Renting this car for a summer vacation trip. First thing I noticed is the rear window has a smaller visibility view. Had a hard time seeing the road directly behind me. Further on back, no problem. Next thing was the annoying speed limit indicator going off every time I went over 55 mph. Took me an hour to figure out how to turn that off. You had to go to the (DIC) driver information center settings to turn that off. Now the most annoying feature is the Auto Stop. Every time you stop, the engine shuts off until you take your foot off the brake. When taking your foot off the brake, then the engine restarts. Constantly turning on and off during city driving. Extremely annoying with the constant shutter as the engine shuts off. Can't imagine what the transmission and engine will be like with this feature at 50,000 miles. Car is being rented and only had 1,800 miles on it. So it's right off the line. Highway driving was fine. Ride a little hard on rough roads. Gas mileage great. The rear view camera was a very nice feature. A/C was good. Rented a 2015 Cruze last year and was impressed with that model. Renting a 2016 this year and would consider it a downgrade. If looking to buy I would take it out and drive in the city for a half hour and get a good feel for the Auto Stop feature before making a final decision.

Unstable Steering

It appears that the industry's heading to electronic power steering. The almost unthinkingly repeated justification for that is supposed to be some [unspecified] improvement in fuel economy, but I suspect that any fuel mileage gains are trivial and incidental. The real reason is more likely to be cost of manufacturing savings. By dispensing with a series of mechanical/hydraulic linkages and parts, car makers can save a small bundle, and as a side effect, maybe gain a small bit of gas usage savings.

In my opinion, the systems aren't quite ready for prime time, and seem to have been rushed to market. Which isn't anything new; beta testing's been common in high tech for a long time now. However, in automobiles, the results may be disastrous; even ending in death. Toyota had its bout of electronic power steering issues with the previous production run of the Corolla. Having driven a Ford and several Chevy's using electronic power steering, I'd say the Americans are doing far worse.

I test drove two different brand new generation Cruzes on two different roads. In either case, when accelerating, the new Cruze feels unstable and almost out of control. You can feel lack of security. The car feels as if you're driving it on a sheet of sheer ice. At highway speeds, that feeling only intensifies. The car never feels glued to the road, solid, and sure. Indeed, it feels the opposite of that. The tiniest twitch of your hand on the steering wheel makes the car veer, and if you correct, it veers the other way. You quickly feel as if you're going into a tailspin.

Eventually, you may get accustomed to all of the instability, but it's likely to rear it's scary head in bad weather - exactly when you need to feel in total control of your vehicle. I would imagine that the car would do poorly in accident avoidance situations, such as veering to avoid the cell phone texting driver who just popped into your lane.

The 2016 Corolla and the 2016 Civic feel much more secure than the Cruze. However, all of them fail in this respect when compared to a car with standard power steering [a feature becoming rare nowadays].

Beyond that, the Cruse had more power and better acceleration than the Corolla, but less than the Civic. Visibility is poor. You pretty much can't see a thing over your left shoulder, making merging or changing lanes a coin toss. Good luck. The rear window is narrow and radically slanted [just as on the Civic], reducing visibility and disconnecting you from the road further.

In the Premier model, the interior was plush, upscale, and nicely appointed. Chevy's put in a lot of effort to reduce harshness, noise, and vibration, so you have a real sense of a luxury-type interior. By comparison, the Corolla's a spartan econo-box, and even the new, improved Civic falls short of the Cruze Premier. The next step down LT has less of the sense of luxury, and more plastic presence, but the quietness and sense of refinement remain.

Besides the steering instability, the ride itself is pleasantly smooth. The Corolla is significantly harsher and more jarring. The Civic is better than the Corolla, but still a distance in this respect from the Cruze.

What all of the arrogant, self-congratulatory automotive reviewers have failed to mention - besides the screamingly stark and dangerous shortcoming of the unstable steering [one such honcho actually described the 2016 handling as sure and precise! - these people really do seem to exist in country club universe] - is that the car battery is located inside the passenger compartment of the car - specifically, right under the rear seat. The justification for this that the battery won't be subjected to extremes of engine compartment heat and hard, freezing cold. All of that may be true, but I wonder if any consideration was given for the potential for exploding batteries. Additionally, unless the engineers worked out a different solution [not betting on it with American car makers], the electric cables now have to run under the car, from back to front. If so, then those cables will be exposed to water, salt, snow, and everything else to which the underbody of a car's exposed.

Since the car reviewers haven't mentioned the issue of steering stability [they mostly only say good things about every car they test, and rarely address issues such as reliability], and the public hasn't made any complaints, it's unlikely that GM will make any positive improvements to their electronic power steering designs any time soon. Indeed, they may even be going backwards in that regard. I'd previously driven a 2015 Cruze Premier. The steering had the many of the same issues as the new model does, but not as much. It seemed a bit more stable. With the new model having even more insecure steering than the one it replaces, it seems clear that GM's attention is focused elsewhere.

So close and yet so far

I had been waiting for this car to come out for over a year. I like compact cars that have decent interior space, and on paper, this looked like it would be great. When it finally came out, I took an LT for a long test drive, fully expecting to buy it if I liked it. There were several things I liked about it: (1) Once going, the engine accelerated really well. (2) The driver's seat was extremely comfortable. (3) The ride and handling were great for an inexpensive compact car. (4) The rear seats finally have decent legroom. (5) Tight turning radius makes it very easy to maneuver in tiny parking spaces. (6) The instruments and infotainment screen gave me all that I needed and were easy to use. OK, sounds great, but I didn't buy it. Why? Because: (1) The stupid start/stop that cannot be turned off. I hate this feature, it completely intrudes on the driving experience and makes it not natural. (2) First gear feels remarkably weak - it's almost as if the car is starting in second gear or something. Added to the annoying hesitation from the start/stop, the car felt downright unsafe if I have to make a quick move from a stop such as doing a left turn before oncoming traffic. The car is great once it gathers some speed, but there's something odd about how it first gets moving. (3) The rear window is really small - at least the backup camera comes standard. (4) The interior, while spacious, was not attractive. The one I drove had this shiny black hard dashboard and the color and material extended to the doors. Maybe it works in other colors. So overall, I left the dealership feeling disappointed because I had really wanted to like this car and it does have some great attributes. I am thinking of getting the LT in manual, which would eliminate the start/stop and pudgy first gear issues.

T h i s c a r i s b a d

I got rear ended and Enterprise gave me this car, with only 4,000 miles on it, while mine was being repaired. Interior looked good, seats are super comfortable, and the touch screen info center is surprisingly, not bad. Colors were vibrant, touch sensitivity was nice, and Apple CarPlay was very cool to use considering my current car is not new enough to have that feature. Backup camera was a nice touch too. Ride quality was a little soft for my taste, but very comfortable. Steering was way too mushy for me, however most American cars are like that, so I can't be too surprised. Acceleration and power were satisfactory considering the small size of the engine. For 1.4L of displacement, I was actually pleasantly surprised. The brakes were a little touchy, but I prefer responsive, powerful brakes to squishy ones so not complaints there. So far, everything I've said was quite positive, and you may wonder, why is this car killing me from the inside out? Auto-stop technology. This feature makes me question who got in the final prototype car and said, "this is great!". For those of you who are not familiar with this feature, I can explain. Auto-stop will temporarily shut off your engine when the car is stopped, for example, at a red light. Doing so saves fuel when the car is not moving. Once the driver lets his/her foot off the brake, the engine automatically starts back up and you're on your way. On paper, this feature sounds fantastic. However, it absolutely ruins the driving experience of this car. Every time I come to a stop, you feel a slight shudder as the engine shuts off. Once this happens, the auxiliary battery engages to power all the cars accessories temporarily (a/c, radio, 12v ports, headlights, etc) until the engine starts turning the alternator again. However, running an a/c compressor takes a fair amount of energy, so to ensure the auxiliary battery is not drained, the Chevy Cruze turns your a/c fan speed all the way down to the lowest setting next to off. This, in my opinion, is legitimately unacceptable. When a feature that is supposed to happen behind the scenes alters my climate control, it is going to frustrate me. In the Texas heat where cars left out in the sun can reach interior temperatures well in excess of 140 degrees, having my a/c fan essentially get disabled at stoplights is infuriating. Then, when I let my foot off the gas, there is a noticeable delay where the car is in neutral, then the whole car jolts forward as the engine turns over and the clutch is engaged. I have zero faith in this power train, and it feels unsafe to drive. When trying to take unprotected lefts at busy intersections, I have to press the gas before I actually want to start moving in order to negate the delay of the auto stop feature. Chevy claims the car can sense when the operator is in stop and go traffic versus daily driving, to ensure the car does not constantly turn on and off in bumper to bumper traffic. I have not noticed this to be true, as even in stop and go traffic during my 45 minute commute home, the engine turns off every time the car stops moving, which makes it feel like you're riding in a car with someone who learned how to drive a manual trans yesterday. I am honestly just shocked that something like this could make it off the assembly line, and I see plenty of these vehicles on the road. Am I the only one that feels like this is a laughable attempt at fuel economy or are all the owners of this car feeling as if they shot themselves in the foot? What is sad is that this would be, quite honestly, a very nice car if this feature were to be removed. I legitimately have essentially zero other complaints, however this feature completely kills the driving experience and makes it more frustrating than it is worth. I don't know how many people will read this far, but please, if you plan to buy this car take it for a very through test drive, with lots of frequent stops so you can experience auto-stop technology and decide if it's right for you.

Summary:

Car stopped and was completely dead in the middle of the highway, hazard lights didn't work. onstar didn't work, i couldn't roll windows down and could not unlock doors to get out of vehicle. 10 mins later vehicle restarted like nothing had happened. after having it towed back to dealership seeing as car was leased only 14 days prior, they stated this was a known recall and that battery cable wasn't properly secured. i was never made aware of the recall even though gm said they issued it on 5/24/16 and this happened on 6/1/16. dealership and gm both refused responsibility stating it was a known recall when i asked to return the car that almost killed me and offered absolutely no escape route. beware there is no way out of the 2016 chevy cruze without battery power; doors auto lock and "knob" recedes into door and cannot be manually opened in any way.

Crash: NoFire: YesNumber of Injured: 0Number of Deaths: 0
Summary:

As i was driving about 35 on a city street, everything seemed like just any other day. but it was far from it. i started to smell a funny plastic/rubber like smell coming from the front of my car. so immediately pulled over to check what was going on. it is key to note that i also checked my engine temperature, speculating that maybe i forgot to top off the coolant or something, but the temperature was perfect. i stopped the car, popped the hood, and saw what was to my shock just insane... a 3 foot flame that was burning up my whole engine compartment. i did not even try to put the flame out with any means because the flame was located too close to the fuel injectors and i was not confident enough to risk it and try to put out the flame. i called 911 and in several minutes, to my luck, they were there and put the flame out before the car blew up. however, the whole front of the car and some of front interior is basically melted and the car is not useful for anything anymore. this was a spontaneous flame that happened while driving normally at about 35 mph on a 70 degree day. what happened? i do not know... but what i do know is that cars are not supposed to put their drivers and passengers at risk of dying just because a person wants to peacefully drive down to point b from point a. please look into this, whoever will be doing so. this kind of car manufacturing is unacceptable! *tr

Crash: NoFire: NoNumber of Injured: 0Number of Deaths: 0
Summary:

Received first inspection, leaving the dealer, the car smelled of possibly a burning or something unknown. i did not assume this wasn't normal as they had to check several things for the inspection. i had to drive vehicle with open windows for a few days. but i thought that perhaps while checking the oil they may have gotten some on the engine or something. a few days later, the car was making a clank sound when drive gear engaged from full stop. 11 days later, started the car and it it had revved over 4000 rpm. stopped itself within several seconds. foot was still on the brake. drove 5 miles, stopped and parked vehicle. returning home, on a highway, my car suddenly went over 4000 rpm again while not accelerating excessively, flat and straight roadway, overcast day, mid afternoon. was doing @54 miles ph. at the high rev, the car had stopped its momentum and was slowing down, but the rpm did not. the car went through several gears then oriented itself many seconds later. recovery speed was 42 mph. immediately called the dealer and scheduled a drop off. has @10,000 miles on it. mostly highway driving, a few days a week. otherwise it is parked. my fear was failure to continue momentum resulting in another vehicle colliding with mine and the inability to take any steps to prevent that from occurring due to loss of mobility and control of acceleration.

2016 Chevrolet Cruze Review

From Edmunds.com

2016 Chevrolet Cruze Limited Review

From Edmunds.com

The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze Limited compact sedan is a placeholder, a renamed 2015 model that's offered in lieu of the all-new but late-arriving 2016 Cruze. So what's it got to offer, and what does the competition look like? Can the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze Limited hold its own in terms of features, performance and fuel economy?

The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze Limited might sound like a premium trim level of this small sedan, but in fact it's just a continuation of the original Cruze generation, which dates back to 2011. This placeholder model gives Chevrolet dealers a compact sedan to sell while production of the fully redesigned 2016 Cruze ramps up.

As such, the Cruze Limited remains a competent member of the economy sedan class, with decent fuel efficiency, sharp if aging styling and a solid roster of features for the money. It suffers a bit, though, from a cabin that's not very spacious and an automatic transmission that's not terribly responsive. Moreover, a standout 2015 variant, the peppy and frugal Cruze diesel, is not included in the Cruze Limited lineup.

The Cruze Limited's pricing should be quite attractive due to its carryover status, and the same basic car earned an Edmunds "B" rating not too long ago. Still, there are better choices. The 2016 Honda Civic and 2016 Toyota Corolla each offer appealing content and superior resale value, while the 2016 Kia Forte is a real comer in the segment with solid performance and loads of standard and available features. The 2016 Ford Focus and 2016 Mazda 3, meanwhile, are sportier and more sophisticated. In this impressive company, the 2016 Cruze Limited isn't a top contender, but it could still be worth a look if the price is right.
